Program OverviewTake your devotion to fitness and health to a whole new level by studying a Diploma of Fitness at the Sunshine Coast TAFE.
The Diploma is designed for those looking to gain employment in the fitness industry at a level incorporating rehabilitation and special populations. This year of study will incorporate exercise for specific special populations and muscular / skeletal rehabilitation.
The fitness industry is planning an extra level of registration - Fitness Specialist - for these graduates, which will allow them to work alongside Rehabilitation Specialists such as Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists.
The program and delivery of this course was voted by Fitness Queensland to be the best in the Queensland in 2004. Graduates have found employment in Fitness Centres, running Aqua programs in pools, working as Personal Trainers self-employed and in fitness centres, working in Rehabilitation and on board cruise ships.
This qualification is recognised throughout Australia, as well as a growing number of countries throughout Asia, Europe, Great Britain and some states of America and Canada.
About your program of studyThe program is delivered over 4 semesters a total of 80 weeks face-to-face format.
Entry RequirementsEquivalent of Australian Year 12 or Non school-leavers are selected according to eligibility and merit, vocational experience, previous study and personal competencies.
Academic RequirementsTAFE Queensland requires proficiency in the English language before you can begin formal studies. This is determined by one of the following prerequisites:- - International English Language Testing System IELTS, academic module score of 6.0 with no individual score less than 5.5;
- Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL - score of 550 PBT or 230 CBT;
- Successful completion of an acceptable formal course where the medium of instruction was English. This does not include ELICOS
- Completion of Stage 3 minimum Direct English Entry Program - University of the Sunshine Coast
- Swedish students - V, VG or MVG in English A & English B on your School Leaving Certificate
Additional RequirementsStudents will be required to purchase institute polo shirts for this course. Textbooks may be recommended by teachers, however are not compulsory. This costs are not included in tuition fees.
What career options will it give me?This may give you an opportunity for employment as a Personal trainer, Fitness Centre Instructor, Fitness Specialist in Rehabilitation, Cruise Ships, Recreation and Leisure Officer.
Can I go on to further related courses?Students intending to do further study may be granted credit towards a Human Movement Degree at QUT and University of the Sunshine Coast.
AssessmentAssessment is geared across several areas. Written assignments, theory and practical tests and tutorial, and requires the completion of all projects and assignments, written and /or practical, as set out within the TAFE student handbook.
Recognition of Prior LearningIndividuals may receive credit for their knowledge and skills through recognition of prior learning RPL upon completion of the RPL process. This process is undertaken once an applicant has been offered and accepted a place in the program.
Assessment may include skills and achievements from:
- Work experience paid and unpaid
- Life experience for example leisure pursuits or voluntary work
- Previous study formal or informal training and education, for example industry training, school, college or adult education classes
In order to grant RPL, an assessor must be confident that candidates are currently competent. Evidence used for assessment may take a variety of forms and could include certification, references from past employers, work samples, testimonials from clients and challenge testing.
