Program OverviewDo you have a flair for hair and an eye for beauty?
The Sunshine Coast TAFEs Hairdressing and Beauty package is specially designed to meet the needs of international students requiring a two year study program.
In your first year, learn to trim, cut and style like the best with a Certificate III in Hairdressing
The course provides participants with the skills to gain employment as a qualified hairdresser covering areas such as colouring perming hair and scalp treatments cutting and styling.
Graduates will also be knowledgeable in the areas of receiving and directing clients, preparing clients for salon services and coordinating salon tasks.
In your second year you will learn to provide services such as facial treatments, lash and brow treatments, make-up artistry, managing a small beauty salon and more.
About your program of studyThe study program has a large practical component and includes vocational placement. Salon services are provided to the public as part of student training. The program includes expo visits /product demonstrations. This package includes 1 year of full time study to achieve the Hairdressing qualification, plus 1 year to achieve an additional qualification in Diploma of Beauty Therapy.
Entry RequirementsThe Certificate III in Hairdressing / Diploma of Beauty Therapy requires
- Completion of Year 10 or equivalent
- Basic computer skills are required for this course.

Academic RequirementsTAFE Queensland requires proficiency in the English language before you can begin formal studies. This is determined by one of the following prerequisites:- - International English Language Testing System IELTS academic module score of 5.5 with no individual score less than 5
- Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL - score of 530 PBT or 197 CBT
- Successful completion of an acceptable formal course where the medium of instruction was English. This does not include ELICOS
- Completion of Stage 2 minimum Direct English Entry Program - University of the Sunshine Coast
- Swedish students - V VG or MVG in English A and English B on your School Leaving Certificate
Additional RequirementsStudents are required to obtain their own professional tool kit for use in this course. Approximate cost is AUD $ 200 - $ 300.
What career options will it give me?Qualified Hairdresser. A Trade Test is required after completion of study and suitable salon experience is acquired in order to gain full Hairdressing trade qualification at the Senior Level. Must be over the age of 21.
In addition the Diploma of Beauty Therapy will qualify you as a Beauty Therapist, Make-Up Artist, Nail Technician.

AssessmentA Trade Test is required after completion of study and suitable salon experience is acquired in order to gain full Hairdressing trade qualification at the Senior Level. Must be over the age of 21.
Assessment is undertaken throughout the program both in practical and theory exercises. Assessment is competency based and requires the completion of all projects and assignments written and/or practical as set out within the each unit of competenecys Study Guides and Workbooks. Written verbal and practical assessments make up the majority of assessments but salon housekeeping, attendance, general attitude and your application to your studies are also taken into account.
Recognition of Prior LearningIndividuals may receive credit for their knowledge and skills through recognition of prior learning RPL upon completion of the RPL process. This process is undertaken once an applicant has been offered and accepted a place in the program.
Assessment may include skills and achievements from:
- Work experience paid and unpaid
- Life experience for example leisure pursuits or voluntary work
- Previous study formal or informal training and education for example industry training school college or adult education classes
In order to grant RPL an assessor must be confident that candidates are currently competent. Evidence used for assessment may take a variety of forms and could include certification references from past employers work samples testimonials from clients and challenge testing.
