Program Overview

Got some innovative ideas? Make them a reality with a Diploma of Building Design and Technology from Sunshine Coast TAFE.

The first year of the course covers the theory underpinning knowledge and practical skills to produce documentation suitable for the construction of residential housing Class 1 andamp 10. Participants will develop specialist skills in design construction technology materials 2D computer aided drafting office administration presentation and residential working drawings

During your second year you will develop specialist skills in design site surveys construction technology materials 3D computer aided drafting project administration digital presentation and working drawings relating to commercial building projects.

Entry Requirements

Equivalent of Australian Year 12 or Non school-leavers are selected according to eligibility and merit vocational experience previous study and personal competencies.

Academic Requirements

TAFE Queensland requires proficiency in the English language before you can begin formal studies. This is determined by one of the following prerequisites:-
  • International English Language Testing System IELTS academic module score of 5.5 with no individual score less than 5
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL - score of 530 PBT or 197 CBT
  • Successful completion of an acceptable formal course where the medium of instruction was English. This does not include ELICOS
  • Completion of Stage 2 minimum Direct English Entry Program - University of the Sunshine Coast
  • Swedish students - V VG or MVG in English A andamp English B on your School Leaving Certificate

Students will have additional expenses which are not included in tuition fees. Students should allow approx. AUD $ 500

What career options will it give me?

Designer/Draftsperson in an Architectural Design/Drafting Office. This academic qualification is recognised by the Queensland Building Services Authority. With suitable practical experience successful graduates can apply to the BSA for a Drafting Licence.

Can I go on to further related courses?

Sunshine Coast TAFE offers no higher qualifications in this area. This qualification may give you credits towards a degree with Central Queensland University.

Assessment

Learning outcomes within this program should be assessed using Competency-Based Assessment strategies that focus on criterion referenced assessment requiring learners to be assessed against a standard rather than the others in the group.

Assessment strategies such as computer-managed or computer based assessment may be used where appropriate.

All assessment materials support accepted principles in relation to reliability validity flexibility and fairness with assessment provided on a regular basis to enable feedback to learners on their performance relative to specified criteria and to help learners develop skills to assess their own performance in relation to specified criteria
In the assessment process consideration is given to the ways in which all learners are able to demonstrate their competence.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Individuals may receive credit for their knowledge and skills through recognition of prior learning RPL upon completion of the RPL process. This process is undertaken once an applicant has been offered and accepted a place in the program.

Assessment may include skills and achievements from:
  • Work experience paid and unpaid

  • Life experience for example leisure pursuits or voluntary work

  • Previous study formal or informal training and education for example industry training school college or adult education classes

In order to grant RPL an assessor must be confident that candidates are currently competent. Evidence used for assessment may take a variety of forms and could include certification references from past employers work samples testimonials from clients and challenge testing.
