The Master of Health Science provides an opportunity for graduates from a variety of health backgrounds to advance their scholarly and professional knowledge in an inter-professional and collegial learning environment, and to develop research capabilities. The degree comprises core and specialist papers and a thesis or dissertation, which gives students the opportunity to complete research relevant to their programme of study.

Students can enter the Master of Health Science by:
1) A direct-entry into Master of Health Science prescribed programme of study for:

  • Advanced Nursing Practice
  • MindBody Health Care
  • Psychology
  • Psychotherapy

It is also possible to undertake a Masters of Health Science in the areas of sport science and physical activity/nutrition. 

(Or alternatively, students can negotiate a research or individual pathway with the Associate Dean Postgraduate.)

OR:

2) Enrolling in a non-endorsed pathway progressing through:
Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science
OR
Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science

PSYCHOTHERAPY

This subject area within AUT’s Psychotherapy masters programme is for beginning psychotherapists or students who wish to become psychotherapists. The programme has two pathways:

  • Adult Psychotherapy
  • Child Psychotherapy

In order to enter this subject area, students need to have successfully completed either the Graduate Diploma in Psychosocial Studies or the Graduate Diploma in Child Mental Health or equivalent. The Adult Psychotherapy masters programme is one year full time plus two years part time. The Child Psychotherapy masters programme is four years part time.

PSYCHOTHERAPY PROGRAMMES
The following graduate diploma programmes can be found in the Health and Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Programme Guide:

Graduate Diploma in Child Mental Health 120 points
Graduate Diploma in Psychosocial Studies 120 points

NB: Students must obtain a ‘B’ grade or better in the Graduate Diploma in Child Mental Health papers 567415 Developmental Theory and Clinical Observations and 567416 Theory and Skills to enter the Master in Health Science in Psychotherapy programme.

Students must obtain a ‘B’ grade or better in the Graduate Diploma in Psychosocial Studies papers 567402 Human Development and 567430 Foundation Skills in Psychotherapy to enter the Master in Health Science in Psychotherapy programme.
