The Certificate introduces students to the theory, issues and practice of communication, and prepares them for the Bachelor of Communication Studies (BCS) degree.
The programme gives students the academic knowledge and skills to begin to understand some of the social, political and cultural foundations of New Zealand society and the media’s role in that society. Students successfully completing the programme will:
- Examine society and how it functions
- Analyse and comprehend the role of the media in society
- Have a sound grasp of information technology and its role in the media
- Have basic media writing and production skills
- Communicate with others confidently and competently in English.
Skills are assessed by completing assignments to appropriate standards, while theoretical knowledge is assessed by formal exams.

- Completion of Year 12
- 48 NCEA Level 2 credits plus 8 Level 1 credits in reading and writing

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
Applicants for whom English or Māori is not their first language are required to provide proof of an acceptable pass/grade gained in an accepted English language test.
THE KEY SKILLS YOU WILL ACQUIRE
The first semester papers emphasise reading, writing and gaining background knowledge and understanding of New Zealand society. Students improve their language abilities and study papers in media and communication.
In the second semester students learn specialist skills in journalism, media communication, public relations and media writing.

This programme is designed as a foundation to the BCS programme.

For students who have successfully completed the Certificate of Communication Studies, there are specific entry requirements into the Bachelor of Communication Studies.
