Why choose this program? This program is not available to International students. This program provides high-achieving secondary school leavers with an intensive two-year degree that allows guaranteed entry into the Griffith Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery on achieving a GPA of at least five for the program. You will develop knowledge and skills in modern biosciences and clinical sciences and their application to the development of medicine, biomedical research and health care services. In first year, you will be introduced to the basic sciences underpinning biomedical science by studying anatomy, chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology, microbiology, physiology, molecular genetics and psychology. In second year, you will cover many of these disciplines in greater depth, including more medically-focused courses in immunology, infectious disease, pharmacology, metabolic biochemistry, health, law and ethics, and epidemiology. Both years will involve knowledge and problem-based learning, as well as practical, laboratory-based training in the biomedical sciences. In order to promote diversity in learning, you will also study a number of non-science courses from a broad range of offerings across the University. Guaranteed entry into the Griffith Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery program The Bachelor of Medical Science program guarantees entry into the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery program upon achieving a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 5.0 for the program. The GPA will be calculated according to Graduate Medical Admissions Centre procedures. In the interest of equity and fairness to all applicants, applicants who do not achieve the GPA requirement regardless of circumstances such as illness, misadventure or disadvantage during the Bachelor of Medical Science program will not meet the stated criteria for admission and, therefore, cannot be considered for entry to the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery program. Successful Bachelor of Medical Science students will be guaranteed a place in the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program subject to achieving a minimum GPA of 5.0 with access to the various types of MBBS places based upon their preference and proportionally allocated on the overall ranking derived from the combination of the UMAT and interview score. Quotas for types of places in the MBBS program may change between the offer of a Bachelor of Medical Science place and entry into the MBBS program. The type of place offered in the MBBS program (to Bachelor of Medical Science students) will be conditional upon that type of place being available for entry into the MBBS program. If that type of place is no longer available, then students will be made an offer based on their second preference. The Bachelor of Medical Science is a fast-tracked two-year program which guarantees entry into the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery for high achieving students. Attendance This program is an intensive two-year degree that will be offered full-time at the Gold Coast in on-campus mode. Intensive teaching periods and web-based courses will be available. Career opportunities By graduating with a GPA of 5.0, you will be fully prepared to commence studies towards a degree in medicine which is your pathway to a number of rewarding careers including specialist clinical practice, primary care medicine, biomedical research and health care services.
