This programme provides professional education for people who work with children with mental health issues. It also provides a pathway of study for graduates and workers who want to enter this field from related areas, such as social work, counselling, occupational therapy, nursing, teaching, residential care and youth services.
The Graduate Diploma in Child Mental Health is the first stage of AUT University’s integrated Child Psychotherapy programme, which leads to qualification as a beginning Child Psychotherapist. Graduates who complete the Master of Health Science (Child Psychotherapy pathway) can apply for graduate membership of the New Zealand Association of Child and Adolescent Psychotherapists.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
- Undergraduate degree, preferably in an associate area, or its equivalent
- Preference for relevant work or voluntary experience in the people helping field
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
Applicants for whom English or Māori is not their first language are required to provide proof of an acceptable pass/grade gained in an accepted English language test.
THE KEY SKILLS YOU WILL ACQUIRE
The programme will provide students with the knowledge and theory base that underlies mental health practice with children, adolescents and their families. Students will gain an advanced level of knowledge and theory, which will enable them to understand child and adolescent behaviour, individually and within families. Students complete an observational placement.
