Incorporating the Postgraduate Diploma in Tourism Studies
The tourism industry is growing rapidly on the back of global marketing campaigns, investment, and research and innovation, and is considered the world’s biggest employer.
The two-year Master of Tourism Studies aims to produce high calibre graduates who can plan developments, mitigate negative impacts and understand processes that create value in these buoyant times. The programme will also prepare graduates to turn the industry around when it faces inevitable downturns.
The Master of Tourism Studies is for candidates who have stair-cased through undergraduate and honours tourism programmes, and who want to study more advanced coursework. The degree also caters to those in industry who wish to enhance their skills and knowledge base for career advancement.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
- The admission requirement is completion of a relevant bachelors degree with a B pass average or better in papers at Level 7 or equivalent
- An applicant who does not meet the educational requirement for admission will be required to submit evidence of the ability to study at Level 9
- An applicant may be required to attend a selection interview
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
Applicants for whom English or Māori is not their first language are required to provide proof of an acceptable pass/grade gained in an accepted English language test.
THE KEY SKILLS YOU WILL ACQUIRE
Graduates will be proficient and knowledgeable in a wide range of senior management competencies within the tourism industry. They will be capable of pursuing further postgraduate study.
Graduates will demonstrate:
- Advanced theoretical concepts and knowledge in tourism to investigate professional practice and/or develop further graduate studies
- An ability to apply in-depth knowledge and insights based on theoretical and empirical investigation of a specific tourism topic or issue through a dissertation or thesis
- An understanding of a range of philosophical and methodological issues in tourism research
- An ability to analyse the critical role that tourism plays as a generator of regional economic development – especially the notion of tourism as an enabler to enhance sustainable development outcomes
- An ability to take and implement tourism planning and development decisions based on past and current socio-cultural, environmental, political and economic impacts through critical analysis
- An ability to initiate strategic initiatives which result in greater co-operation, understanding and debate across the tourism sectors and tourism-related fields on contemporary issues
- An appreciation of a range of professional, business and ethical issues and responsibilities, within the context of tourism as a change agent and as an enabler for wealth creation
- The application of enhanced leadership qualities and creative insights to incorporate informed tourism decision-making based on the analysis of evidence drawn from multiple sources
- An appreciation and demonstration of a commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and its policies relating to tourism and innovation
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Graduate pathways will primarily be focused on industry or government sector employment and the continuation of studies at a more advanced postgraduate level (PhD). It is expected that graduates from the Master of Tourism Studies programme will significantly enhance their professional capabilities and the context and insights in which they work. They will be favourably placed for promotion and increased leadership responsibilities.

Through a variety of specialised papers students will enhance their knowledge and perception of tourism as both a discipline and an industry. Opportunities will be provided to enable students to specialise in developing research expertise in a range of areas including: tourism management, sustainability and tourist information. Paper selection will depend on the option students take – thesis or dissertation.
