Develop your mathematical and statistical skills to a high level – and learn how to apply them in the real world. Both mathematics and statistics are used as a basis for analysing and developing data models over a wide variety of scientific, engineering and business applications. These models are used to provide forecasts, improve the quality of products and processes, and optimise resources. If students have no ncea level 3 credits in mathematics, they must discuss entry with the head of school of computing and mathematical sciences to determine a special course of study. ENTRY REQUIREMENT - University Entrance (UE) is the minimum entry requirement and science subjects are useful but not required.
- Preferred subjects at Level 3 on entry: 28 Credits in Mathematics or equivalent.
THE KEY SKILLS YOU WILL ACQUIRE
Knowledge of mathematics, statistics and different research methods, including methods to use for particular types of statistical data. Design surveys and research methods and analyse data. And a knowledge of computer database programmes. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Mathematicians and statisticians are in demand for jobs involving the analysis and modelling of data in biological, medical, general scientific and sociological research. They also advise on improving industrial efficiency, quality management and market research. Other careers include operations research (using mathematical methods to optimise the use of people and resources) and mathematical modelling and forecasting, which are useful in many business, computer engineering and scientific fields.
