This programme is for mental health support workers who may have completed the National Certificate in Mental Health or other relevant education programmes, or who have extensive experience in mental health support work and can demonstrate readiness to study at degree level determined by the programme coordinator. All papers in the diploma can be credited towards the Bachelor of Health Science in Applied Mental Health.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
Applicants for whom English or Māori is not their first language are required to provide proof of an acceptable pass/grade gained in an accepted English language test.
THE KEY SKILLS YOU WILL ACQUIRE
By the end of the programme students will:
- Consistently demonstrate knowledge and understanding of mental health and illness and mental health services, and appropriate attitudes and values for mental health work
- Demonstrate skills to communicate effectively with people who are mentally distressed, whose behaviour is perceived as unacceptable, who are responding with anger or who are experiencing severe symptoms of mental illness
- Assist consumers/tangata whai ora to enhance living in, and/or establish their journey of wellness and recovery
- Have the understanding of family/whanau and community, to support people with mental illness to access support in their communities, and strengthen or create such communities so they may live in society as fully integrated citizens
- Consistently demonstrate culturally appropriate practice, consistent with Te Tiriti O Waitangi
- Consistently practice safely, ethically and professionally and with knowledge of relevant legislation.
