AUT University Nursing contributes to the growth of healthy and resilient communities by preparing students to be competent health professionals through scholarship, innovation and passion, and in partnership with key stakeholders in nursing.

AUT nursing graduates are prepared for employment in a variety of areas in the health care system. The programme is responsive to the changing needs of health care and is designed to encourage students to apply new knowledge in practice situations. Over the three years of study, 1500 programme hours are allocated to clinical (practical) learning experiences. Graduates will then undertake the Nursing Council of New Zealand’s State Examination to gain registration as a comprehensive nurse.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • University Entrance
  • Must meet Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act requirements
  • Police clearance, medical check and reference

SPECIAL ADMISSION

Applicants over 20 years of age who do not hold a university entrance qualification (such as NCEA or CIE) may qualify for university entrance via Special Admission.

 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

Applicants for whom English or Māori is not their first language are required to provide proof of an acceptable pass/grade gained in an accepted English language test. 

 

THE KEY SKILLS YOU WILL ACQUIRE

Nursing knowledge incorporates sciences, theories and concepts, which are applied to practice. Over the three years of the BHSc, these areas cover:

  • Wellness of families and individuals
  • Primary health care
  • Acute care in hospitals
  • Care for people within the mental health and rehabilitative services
  • Caring for adults and children with complex health needs
  • Nursing the older adult

 

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Nursing registration enables scope for specialization in health service delivery and work in organizations allied to the health sector. Examples include:

  • Primary health care nursing
  • Acute care nursing – public or private
  • Specialty nursing practice, such as mental health nursing and paediatrics
  • Advanced nursing practice

  • Nurse in defence forces
