The Midwifery programme prepares students for independent and professional life as a midwife and to care for women and their families in childbirth. More than half of the degree involves clinical practice, such as being on call for women in labour and birth, because practical and hands on experience is a vital component of becoming a midwife. Applicants should be prepared to gain full time clinical experience in all areas of Auckland.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • University Entrance
  • Must meet Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act requirements
  • Interview may be required
  • Police clearance, medical check and reference

SPECIAL ADMISSION

Applicants over 20 years of age who do not hold a university entrance qualification (such as NCEA or CIE) may qualify for university entrance via Special Admission.

 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

Applicants for whom English or Māori is not their first language are required to provide proof of an acceptable pass/grade gained in an accepted English language test. 

 

THE KEY SKILLS YOU WILL ACQUIRE

The programme prepares graduates to:

  • Work in partnership with women and their families
  • Provide excellent midwifery care
  • Understand normal childbirth
  • Use knowledge of complicated childbirth and neonatal care

 

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Midwives work in the areas of pregnancy, childbirth and the first four to six weeks after childbirth. They can be employed in public hospitals services, or set up practice as an independent midwife.
