The Master of Educational Leadership will expand and enhance the knowledge and professional practice skills of experienced educators and leaders, equipping them to contribute to the development of professional educational practice in Aotearoa/New Zealand through enhancing their leadership capabilities. It covers a range of educational leadership issues in the early childhood, compulsory and tertiary educational sectors, while also allowing students to contextualise their specific areas of interest, and has an inclusive approach to issues of cultural diversity and leading in diverse cultures and communities.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The normal admission requirement for the Master of Educational Leadership is one of the following:

  • A bachelors degree and one year of postgraduate study at honours or postgraduate diploma level
  • A four year degree
  • A bachelors degree and a postgraduate or graduate certificate and at least two years' relevant professional experience
  • A bachelors degree plus at least three years' relevant professional experience
  • Evidence of professional experience or a recognised professional qualification deemed by the programme Board of Studies to be equivalent to the level of competence specified in the above options.

 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

Applicants for whom English or Māori is not their first language are required to provide proof of an acceptable pass/grade gained in an accepted English language test. 

 

ACADEMIC CAPABILITIES

  • Competence in provision of appropriate evidence of advanced knowledge about a specialist body of theoretical and applied topics relevant in the area of educational leadership
  • Demonstration of the capacity for both self-directed study and the ability to work independently with some supervision
  • Synthesis of knowledge from diverse sources and to conceptualise this within a wide range of educational initiatives
  • Identification of critical issues in educational leadership literature and students' own work environments and development of effective strategies to address these issues
  • Location, synthesis and application of appropriate theory
  • Competence in conducting meaningful systematic enquiry
  • Systematic construction, assessment and evaluation programmes in a range of educational settings
  • Communication using advanced levels of written and spoken English that demonstrate very effective oral and written communication skills.

 

PROFESSIONAL CAPABILITIES

  • Enhanced understanding of leadership issues in students' own and other educational settings
  • Culturally appropriate responses for Māori staff/students concerning leadership issues
  • Culturally appropriate responses for Pasifika staff/students concerning leadership issues
  • Effective response to leadership issues facing a diverse range of students/teachers from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Use of theory to direct practice and use of practice to formulate theory
  • Engagement in reflective, ethical and effective learning and teaching practice in relation to educational leadership
  • Demonstration of behaviours and attitudes consistent with professional leadership

 

PERSONAL CAPABILITIES

  • On-going self-analysis of learning and practice in relation to educational leadership
  • Flexibility of thought to creatively construct alternative solutions to problems
  • Construction of strategies to continue self and professional development
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to diverse cultural influences within early childhood to tertiary education sectors and integration of these factors into practice

 

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Graduates of the Master of Educational Leadership will have enhanced leadership capabilities, thereby having expanded opportunities to undertake or continue leadership roles in educational organisations (from the ECE to tertiary sectors), government, and corporate settings.
