- A three-year qualification from a New Zealand tertiary institution or equivalent
- Relevant professional experience.
SPECIAL ADMISSION
Applicants over 20 years of age who do not hold a university entrance qualification (such as NCEA or CIE) may qualify for university entrance via Special Admission.
THE KEY SKILLS YOU WILL ACQUIRE
- A sound knowledge and understanding of children's development, of learning and teaching theory, and curriculum informed by a critical and reflective approach that examines and evaluates wider issues and factors that impact on children, their parents, teachers and local communities.
- Conceptual, critical and reflective thinking, meta-cognitive skills and knowledge of effective teaching strategies. Graduates will display and feel confident and competent in their technical skills (including ICT). They will combine understanding and skill by practising contextually.
- Graduates will display enthusiasm for teaching, for working cooperatively and collaboratively with others, in valuing parents and their interest in their children, in valuing difference, and in further developing those personal/professional attributes that enhance the role of the teacher, sector and specialty.
This knowledge and skill will be completed within the context of a sector (e.g. early childhood or primary) and a particular philosophical, conceptual and curriculum base (e.g. Steiner or Montessori).
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
- Graduates currently teaching in state schools or centres will either return to those centres or schools and practice in a way that acknowledges and incorporates the philosophy and accepted pedagogy of the chosen specialty, or see the qualification as a basis for seeking employment within the specialty sector.
- Graduates currently teaching in specialty centres, units or schools will consolidate and extend their knowledge, understanding and skill within their present position, or use the new qualification gained to seek a new position or promotion.
- As international teachers (usually in specialty contexts) graduates will consolidate and extend their knowledge, understanding and skill within their present position, or use the new qualification gained to seek a new position or promotion.
