This is the only program of its kind in Australia and it has been developed in response to rising demand for special education graduates nationwide. In preparing for your career, you will study the national key learning areas in primary school teaching - the disciplines that form the basis of learning and teaching - as well as your chosen area in special education. You will also gain significant off-campus practice teaching experience in regular and special schools and special education units so that you can become competent and confident in classroom teaching. An Honours strand which may be undertaken in Years 3 and 4 is also an option for those students who meet the necessary academic criteria. Attendance The Bachelor of Education - Special Education is presented full-time on campus at the Mount Gravatt campus. As a full-time student you will generally attend 12-16 hours of scheduled classes per week throughout the semester. Classes may be scheduled during the day and evening throughout the week. It should be noted that in the Bachelor of Education - Special Education, practicum placements will occur in most semesters. Students will be required to attend practicum placements in schools and this may include attendance in the order of 40 hours per week for periods ranging from 1 to 4 weeks. Some placements may take place outside of the Brisbane metropolitan area. Some courses will require students to complete assessment items during practicum periods. This will require students to enrol in these courses and the associated practicum in the same semester. Professional recognition As a graduate, you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Queensland College of Teachers. This qualification is recognised nationally and internationally. Career opportunities You will be qualified for a particularly rewarding career teaching in regular primary school settings and in your chosen specialist area. Historically, most graduates have found employment with Education Queensland and are often given their first teaching appointment in provincial towns and country locations, special schools, special education units attached to primary and secondary school and also special developmental pre-schools. Independent schools also employ teachers with special education qualifications because of the inclusion of more special needs students in those schools.
