The Master of Architecture (Architectural Design)/MArch(Arch Des) and Master of Built Environment (Sustainable Development)/MBEnv (SustDev) degrees have distinctive yet complimentary emphases. The MArch(Arch Des) caters primarily to those interested in advanced architectural design and students are expected to have professional degrees in architecture. The MBEnv (SustDev) focuses on applying the principles of sustainability to design within the built environment. The combined program enables students to strategically select elective courses, allowing them to complete requirements for both degrees in 2 years (4 semesters). This is a reduction of one semester in the time it would normally take to complete both degrees separately.

The combined program leads to the award of two degrees with two testamurs - MArch (ArchDes) and MBEnv(SustDev). It is a post-professional qualification and is not accredited for professional registration.

A recognised four-year Bachelor degree in Architecture, and submission of a design portfolio, and personal and employer declarations. One year of post graduation professional experience in architectural practice is desirable.

Environmentally oriented students are able to improve their knowledge and skills in applying sustainability principles to the planning, design, construction and management of buildings as well as to the urban environment in general. Architecturally oriented students are able to expand their range of skills and the boundaries of their knowledge in applying broad sustainability principles, including green building techniques, to their work.
