In preparing for a career teaching primary school children, you will study the national key learning areas in school teaching, the disciplines that form the basis of learning and teaching and elective courses. The elective studies in years three and four will focus on expanding and enhancing your general education. Study courses include primary education, curriculum and education studies and also professional studies. You will go off campus to real schools to develop your practical teaching skills and become competent and confident in classroom teaching. Your training will also enable you to consider other occupations where planning and organising ability, empathy, communication and highly developed social skills are required. As an option to your training as a primary school teacher, you may apply to study an Honours strand or a specialisation in third and fourth years provided you meet the academic requirements. You may undertake an Honours strand or specialisation in lieu of the electives. Honours students, and those completing one of the specialisations, study a set sequence of courses in third and fourth years. The following specialisations are available at the Gold Coast: - Health and Physical Education*
- Middle Schooling
[*] This specialisation prepares students for employment as specialist Health and Physical Education teachers. Attendance The Bachelor of Education - Primary is offered full-time on campus at the Gold Coast campus. As a full-time student, you will generally attend 12-15 hours of scheduled classes per week throughout the semester. Classes may be scheduled during the day and evening throughout the week. In the Bachelor of Education - Primary, you must maintain a full-time study load. If you have reasons why you cannot maintain enrolment in 30 credit points per semester, you must seek approval from the Program Convenor to take a reduced study load. In Semesters 2, 3, 5, 7 and 8 of the Bachelor of Education - Primary students who enrolled in Year 1 of that degree from 2005 onwards, and in Semesters 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 of the Bachelor of Education - Primary students who enrolled prior to 2005, are required to undertake unpaid teaching practice/internships which require full-time attendance at a school setting on multiple occasions. Some placements may be outside of the Gold Coast area. Professional recognition As a graduate, you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Queensland College of Teachers. This qualification is recognised nationally and internationally. Career opportunities Primary teaching can be a rewarding career and employment prospects for graduates are good. Opportunities can be found in Queensland public and private schools, in other states and overseas or in education and training fields other than schools. Honours graduates are eligible to undertake research and higher degrees leading to wider career choices.
