Why choose this program?

Adult and Vocational Education at Griffith.

This program prepares you for a career as an educator and trainer in industry, TAFE, post-compulsory schooling or adult and community education. You will be required to undertake teaching practice in a vocational education, training or workplace setting as part of the program. This degree can lead to teacher registration in Queensland.

You will develop an understanding of the key concepts and values underlying adult and vocational education, communication and change, teaching and learning and also curriculum development.

The introductory themes are expanded into three major streams. You may elect to complete more than one major stream as part of your degree.

The major streams include:

  • Adult and Vocational Teaching (AVT)
  • Adult Literacy and Numeracy (ALN)
  • Human Resource Development (HRD)

If you plan to work as a tutor or demonstrator, or if you are involved in training as part of your occupation, you may exit (after completing the first year of the program) with the Associate Diploma of Vocational Instruction award. The Bachelor of Training award is also available as an exit point for students who plan to work as tutors in TAFE or as workplace trainers. This exit point award does not lead to teacher registration in Queensland. Please contact the Program Convenor for further details about these exit points.

An Honours stream is an option for those students who meet the academic criteria and wish to pursue a research higher degree or research-related employment. Please contact the Program Convenor for more information.

Attendance

In the Bachelor of Adult and Vocational Education you can choose the number of courses you enrol in per semester and the order in which you will enrol in these courses. Courses in the Bachelor of Adult and Vocational Education may be delivered in a variety of ways and you can choose how you wish to undertake each course. You enrol in an off-campus offering of a course and you will be provided with course materials via a variety of means, including printed materials and via Learning@Griffith.

In most courses there will be on-campus lecture/tutorials at the Mt Gravatt Campus for which attendance is optional for domestic students. International students are required to attend these on-campus lecture/tutorials. For each lecture/tutorial you will generally attend 1-2 hours per week, per course, on the weeks they are offered.

In most courses there will be teletutorials. These will be approximately 1 hour in duration and offered 1-3 times per semester. These are specifically designed for those students unable to attend the on-campus lecture/tutorials.

You are required to use the internet or other electronic media during your enrolment in this course and access to a reliable computer with internet connection is required.

Professional recognition

Graduating with a major in Adult and Vocational Teaching and/or Adult Literacy and Numeracy will make you eligible to apply for registration with the Queensland College of Teachers. This qualification is recognised nationally and internationally.

Career opportunities

You will be qualified to work in the vocational education and training sector which includes TAFE, industry and private training providers and also post-compulsory schooling or in a human resource development role in the private or public sector. A major in Adult Literacy and Numeracy will also equip you to work in the field of literacy learning.
