What is Music at UNSW?

The School of Music and Music Education offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) with a major sequence in music and a Bachelor of Music (BMus) degree. The BMus allows a greater degree of specialisation in music than the BA, and provides opportunities for professional development in the areas of
musicology, muscianship, ethnomusicology, performance, composition, music technology, jazz studies and music analysis.

Program Description

The Bachelor of Music program is a three-year specialist music degree which enables students to develop their musicianship and their musical skills. Students undertake studies in musicology and ethnomusicolgy - including music history, style, musical perception and analysis, music in its cultural contexts - and musical technology, performance, jazz studies and composition. At the same time, students have enough flexibility in their program to enable them to combine music studies with work in a related discipline such as theatre, languages, English or history. Consistently good work in the BMus may lead to a fourth (honours) year of study.

Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes

The program enables students to develop skills and knowledge in music as preparation for professional work in areas as diverse as music performance, private teaching, broadcasting, recording, arts administration, concert planning, music and arts journalism, arranging and composition.

Career Opportunities

In music production, administration, journalism, broadcasting and recording, performing, teaching, music librarianship, sound archiving, performance planning for concerts, opera and film soundtrack work and arranging.
