What is Interior Architecture?Interior Architecture is a design discipline that focuses specifi cally on interior environments and all aspects of their structural, spatial and material assembly. The Degree The Bachelor of Interior Architecture (BIA) at the FBE was the first of its kind in Australia. The central premise upon which interior architecture is based is that design begins with an existing form, space or structure which can be virtual, drawn or built. This premise underpins the Interior Architecture Program and determines all of its core components and sets the BIA Program at the FBE apart from its competitors. The BIA Program progressively develops creative, technical and analytical skills over the course of the four year degree with each year’s curriculum designed to extend and enhance each student’s understanding, ability and potential. The program is marked by a high level of participation and commitment from staff, students and industry professionals alike. The Bachelor of Interior Architecture provides a framework within which students develop an informed appreciation of the physical, cultural and historical contexts of interior architecture and design. Investigation, experimentation and invention are crucial to this process. Students learn the technical and communication skills necessary to practise effectively as an interior specialist. These include a strong and adaptable skills base in presentation and documentation using freehand drawing, technical drawings, CAD and model-making. However within the program, emphasis is placed as much on the need to engage in a rigorous process of enquiry, analysis and reflection as on the development of technical skills. Graduates understand the professional processes and systems involved in the delivery of design services and have the ability to work strategically and effectively across various roles including designer, project coordinator, collaborator, consultant or team member. The BIA Program emphasises an education with an international perspective and maintains excellent links to industry and the profession, both in Australia and abroad. Students are also encouraged to partake in the international exchange program to complete part of their study in another country.
