Studying Accountancy & Control in Amsterdam

Increasing globalisation presents a need for graduates with a solid training and a broad range of skills, knowledge and international experience in all kinds of business organisations and (inter)national governmental bodies. Dutch universities with their international reputation, and in particular the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA), respond to this need.

Why study at the Universiteit van Amsterdam

The MSc Accountancy & Control is completely taught in English, and is very intensive and selective, ensuring a high standard of education. The one-year programme has a strong international focus and the composition of the academic staff and student population is very international.

The strong international focus of the programme is in keeping with the long tradition of the Netherlands, which despite being a small nation has been internationally oriented since the 17th century. Amsterdam in particular is known for its distinctive cosmopolitan character, both economically and culturally.

MSc Accountancy & Control graduates from UvA have excellent job prospects. The Faculty of Economics and Business is located in the midst of Amsterdam, a city where many foreigners live and work and the financial and cultural centre of the Netherlands. You will certainly find a home away from home here!

The MSc in Accountancy & Control

The MSc Accountancy & Control has two tracks, one in Accountancy and one in Control.

Accountancy

The Accountancy track is designed for Business Economics students seeking a career in the financial sector. It is suitable for students with a general and analytical interest in financial information flows from and within organisations and who want to be able to satisfy the information needs of senior managers and other stakeholders, both internal and external. Combining academic rigour with practical examples and applications, this track provides admission to the UvA Post-Master's Accountancy (PMA) programme, at the end of which students qualify as chartered accountants (taught in Dutch).

Control

This track focuses on the role of accounting information in the financial management of organisations. How can financial and non-financial information be used to influence the decision making of managers and employees? The courses in this track aim to combine academic rigour and practical relevance. Therefore, they provide a multidisciplinary perspective, integrating insights from economics, psychology and organisation theory. Consequently, graduates have a unique knowledge base that consists of specialised knowledge in the fields of finance and accounting and a thorough understanding of how accounting information can be used to manage real-world organisations. The track provides admission to the UvA Executive Master of Finance and Control (EMFC) program (taught in Dutch). MSc Control graduates with at least two years of work experience may also consider entering the international Executive Master of Finance and Control (iEMFC) program (taught in English, admission restrictions apply).

Career prospects

Accountancy

During your studies, you learn to look at various types of organisation from both a financial and an economic perspective. You acquire valuable knowledge, understanding, professional experience and expertise. As a result, your job prospects are excellent. In addition to working as accountants, either employed or self-employed, in practice or in the profession, Accountancy graduates find a variety of positions including controller, financial director, information manager, and consultant, with both commercial and not-for-profit organisations, or are taken on by regulatory bodies like the Financial Markets Authority and De Nederlandsche Bank (Dutch Central Bank).

Control

Your chances of finding interesting work are outstanding. Positions open to Control graduates vary from controller to financial director; jobs in which you are responsible for the financial and general management of organisations. If you have a broad interest in issues related to organisation, accounting and financing, then working as a controller will appeal to you. Controllers are often the 'spider in the web': they have to be able to form and express an opinion about almost all the organisation's activities.
