Third Year (Abroad)

You spend one semester studying at one of our partner universities around the world and one semester working in a company outside of your home country.  Both in and outside the classroom, students acquire an awareness about how business is done in other countries.

Study Abroad
For one semester during the third year, students study at one of our many partner schools abroad.  This is a tremendous opportunity to broaden your knowledge and experience. Through our extended partner relations, IBMS student have a rich choice of countries, languages, cultures, schools and programmes.

Placement/Internship
Students spend five months working in a company outside of their home country.  Students acquire the placement themselves, making use of the information available in IBS such as regular placement offers, previous student reports and shared experiences of fellow students.  Previous student placements include AC Nielsen Jakarta, Indonesia, Philips Auckland New Zealand and Club Med Brussels, Belgium.

Foreign students have the option to do these semesters in the Netherlands but Dutch students must go abroad.  Students may choose the sequence in which they do their study and placement semesters, and of course, you may spend them in different countries.

Fourth Year Majors

The curriculum for the fourth year continues with the new style curriculum. In their final year in IBMS (English Tracks) students study subjects that specialise and support their major.

General structure
At the beginning of year four, students participate in the introduction module, made up of Skills Training and related activities. Students take four core modules in their specialisation (totalling 2o EC). In addition, all students take the English/Business Communication and a Personal Development Training module in the seventh semester to support the core modules and develop further communicative and management skills needed in the business world. Students also choose between a number of electives offered in each semester. Subjects offered in the seventh and eighth semester of IBS have essentially the same structure as the second year. Each module is developed on the understanding that wherever possible a guest speaker from the professional field is built into the programme. The teaching, delivery and assessment of students throughout the Main Phase are based on a clear framework (the professional profile) where modules are competence-based and linked to project based learning.

Graduation project (Eighth semester)
Students can choose between an individual or a group project (in which they will be assessed on an individual basis). Both, the individual research project and the group project will be a research/consultancy project for a company, resulting in a written report containing recommendations. Assessment will be based on the final group product and the individual’s role in it.  A distinct major individual effort must be part of the research for each group member. It is the responsibility of the students to acquire their own projects.
The graduation project is worth 20 European credits per student, which is equal to a workload of 560 hours (28 hours per credit) to be spent per student. The placement and the study abroad as well as a large number of the modules must have been completed by the student before being allowed to participate in the Graduation Project (a total of 144 EC).
