In a world that is growing ever closer, where organisations are becoming bigger and more multi-national it is becoming ever more difficult and important for organisations to communicate effectively with all of their stakeholders. Technology only increases these challenges. Organisations have an ever increasing demand for people who not only understand this but can devise policy and manage the function of communication. This communication is necessary to help the organisations in the sharing and exploitation of knowledge through Internal Communication and Knowledge Management – areas which this programme addresses.

Structure

The study programme lasts three years and is set up in such a way that you master communications on an increasingly higher level. It is comparable to learning a sport: first you learn the rules of the game, then you look at the tactics, next there’s the strategy and in the end, you’re a professional.

Project-based work

Each study period is different. A communications specialist’s work is often project-based, and so is the programme’s setup. Each study year is divided into four periods of nine to ten weeks, each with its own theme. During such a period, you do your own project, usually with a group of fellow students. You regularly get together with your project group, work on the project assignment (often together but also individually) and discuss the progress with the teacher-assistant. We also include a number of support subjects with each project. You will be given skill training, workshops and lectures on the subject you are dealing with at the time.

Major-minor

During the study you will cover the key areas of communication management:

  • Internal Communication
  • Marketing Communication
  • Corporate Communication

A growing number of Minors that allow students to further specialise – notably Communication for Public & Non Governmental Organisations. In addition there is Risk and Crisis Communication, Press & Media, Intercultural Communication, Languages and minors in other subject areas etc.

Content

Communication is a broad field and the programme is highly varied. You delve into the intrinsic and practical side of the profession. You learn how to write communications plans, edit newsletters, draft corporate texts and transform complicated proposals into accessible texts. You will also learn how to steer designers and advertising agencies, generate briefings and provide communications advice.

Folders and brochures are extremely important in business communications. During the programme, we will teach you how these types of communication resources are created. You develop extra feelers for what is going on inside and outside an organisation.

Learning strategy

We want you to interact as much as possible during your Bachelor’s course. We’ll engage you in a mix of classroom tuition, lectures, group activities and project work. But to get your degree, you will have to do more than sit in lectures taking notes – you’ll need to be an active learner. Hands-on assignments will gear you up to work with real companies.

Knowledge

We believe that knowledge is something to be shared – not just with our own students, but with the outside world. We’re always looking for new opportunities to exchange knowledge with people from other places, and we teach our students to do the same.

Talent

Having knowledge isn’t enough. You have to know how to use it, how to adapt and apply it to real situations. Our students learn not just how to think for themselves, but how to do for themselves. Practical experience and independent thinking are a big part of The Hague University experience.

Diversity

To discover new ways of thinking, you have to explore other people’s perspectives. We believe that diversity is absolutely essential to progress. We welcome different viewpoints here, through cross-cultural debate and collaboration.
