The entire programme is taught in English. Although you may find that some knowledge of Dutch is practical and Dutch courses are offered by the university, it is not a necessity to follow the programme or to get by in everyday life in Amsterdam.

The academic year at the UvA starts in the first week of September. A year is devided into two semesters which yield a total of 60 European Credits. Each semester is devided into 2 quarters. One quarter consists of 7 weeks of classes, one week of exam preparation and one week of exams.

What kind of classes can you expect? Courses are taught in different ways, by means of lectures, tutorials and practicals. In first year lectures you will receive a general introduction to the courses, being together with all other students in the programme. In tutorials certain aspects from the lectures and literature are discussed in a smaller group of students. Assignments have to be made to get a thorough knowledge of theory. A practical involves assignments, writing papers and giving oral presentations, again in a small group of students.

Courses are completed by one or several tests, i.e. a written or oral exam, paper or presentation.

The first year of the BSc Economics and Business

The first year of the programme consists of compulsory courses that are similar for all four specializations. This gives our students the unique opportunity to carefully decide which specialization they wish to graduate in. Courses include typical economic subjects like macro- and microeconomics, business subjects like organization and management accounting, and important supportive courses like mathematics and statistics. On average students receive 15 hours of lectures and tutorials a week, around 25 hours are needed to study literature and complete assignments.

Four specializations

In the second and third year the following specializations are offered:

  • Business Studies
  • International Economics
  • International Economics and Finance
  • International Industrial Organisation

Business Studies

Organizations currently face complex circumstances such as globalization, ever-increasing competition, and developments in information and communication technology. Firms need to attract the necessary financial resources, manage complex (logistical) processes, and recruit and develop skilled and motivated employees who are able to be innovative and perform well, to name but a few of the challenges facing today’s businesses and their managers. These challenges are diverse and require a broad knowledge base, which is what the Business Studies programme intends to help students build.

The programme offers a solid base in the area of economics and includes relevant topics from other disciplines, such as psychology, politics, sociology and law. This interdisciplinary approach to organizational issues is at the very root of the program in Business Studies and will equip you as a student with a thorough insight into the way in which businesses function. The programme offers core courses and electives in areas such as strategy and organization, knowledge and information management, financial management, marketing management, entrepreneurship, sustainable management, and human resources management. This combination offers students both a broad base of core knowledge and the opportunity to go more in-depth in an area of their choice.

The specialization in Business Studies helps prepare students for careers in different areas of business management (e.g. general, marketing, or information management), management consulting or policy-making in (multinational) corporations, consulting firms, financial institutions, and government bodies.

Honours programme

Excellent students who perform well in the first semester of the first year have the possibility to do an honours programme and take extra courses during the rest of the programme.
There are two variants, a disciplinary one that offers the possibility to take economics or business courses with an extra study load of 30 credits. Furthermore, there is an interdisciplinary variant that provides the unique chance to develop yourself broadly and to take an interest in scientific, societal, cultural, philosophical and current themes. After succesful completion of the extra and regular courses students receive an honours diploma next to their bachelor diploma.
