COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course combines outdoor environmental experiences (bushwalking, rock climbing, cross-country skiing, canoeing and kayaking) with a program of environmental and outdoor education studies. Course content is drawn from disciplines including environmental studies, education, social psychology, cultural studies and social studies of science.

First year: The emphasis is on understanding basic concepts in environmental studies and gaining a personal and theoretical understanding of outdoor education.
Second and third years: Students develop expertise and teaching skills in two elected environmental activities, and pursue studies in outdoor education theory and environmental studies. Students also choose four electives in an area of interest or sequences of studies to meet the entry requirement for teaching methods for a secondary teaching qualification.

Students undertake a minimum of 135 days of practical work experience over three years including an extended three week walk in the Australian alps in second year.

ADDITIONAL COSTS ($AUD)
Approximate costs include: $A1500-2000 for outdoor field work equipment including sleeping bag and wet weather gear (one-off cost). Students are encouraged to bring any camping gear they already have and to wait until they have commenced the course and are fully briefed before buying any new gear.
 
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
Successful completion of English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at undergraduate (EFS5 (60%) UG) level conducted by La Trobe University Language Centre; or

IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or

TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 550 with a score of 5 or better in the Test of Written English; or

TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 213 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or

TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 80 with no individual score less than 20; or

Satisfactory completion of an English language subject at Year 12 or equivalent level. This must have been completed in the last two years and at an academic level acceptable to the University; or

Approved equivalent.

INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE
The following types of industry experience are available in this course.
 
Workplace experience for academic credit
 
If the industry experience program is not a registered part of their course a student will need to hold work rights on their visa, this permits the student to work up to 20 hours per week when their course is in session and unlimited hours outside these times. However, if a student has completed their course and their student visa is expiring they will need to apply for another visa with work rights rather than renewing their student visa based on undertaking industry experience.
 
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Graduate opportunities include employment with environmental groups, or organisations providing: outdoor recreation, education or nature tourism experiences, working with services for disadvantaged populations, or working at residential camps.
 
PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION
The course is recognised by Victorian education authorities as preparation for teaching in primary and secondary schools, when combined with a Graduate Diploma in Education.
