| COURSE DESCRIPTION |
This course combines training in outdoor guiding (bushwalking and canoeing) with a program of environmental studies and nature tourism. It features a three-year sequence of environmental studies, nature tourism, educational theory, and outdoor and field naturalist practice. Students undertake specialist studies in environmental interpretation, nature tourism, parks and wildlife management.
First year: The emphasis is on understanding basic concepts in environmental studies.
Second and third years: Students develop expertise and teaching skills in natural history. They also pursue studies in environmental interpretation theory and practice, natural heritage and tourism studies, environmental studies and education for sustainability. Students take six electives in an area of interest or sequences of studies in order to meet the entry requirements for teaching methods for a secondary teaching qualification.
Students undertake approximately 80 days of practical work over three years including an extended three-week study of the Murray River environment, by canoe, in second year. |

A$1500-2000 for outdoor field work equipment, including sleeping bag and wet weather gear (one-off cost). . Students are encouraged to bring any camping gear they may already have and to wait until they have commenced the course and are fully briefed before purchasing any new gear. |

| ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS |
Successful completion of English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at undergraduate (EFS5 (60%) UG) level conducted by La Trobe University Language Centre; or
IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or
TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 550 with a score of 5 or better in the Test of Written English; or
TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 213 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or
TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 80 with no individual score less than 20; or
Satisfactory completion of an English language subject at Year 12 or equivalent level. This must have been completed in the last two years and at an academic level acceptable to the University; or
Approved equivalent. |

| Workplace experience for academic credit |
| |
| If the industry experience program is not a registered part of their course a student will need to hold work rights on their visa, this permits the student to work up to 20 hours per week when their course is in session and unlimited hours outside these times. However, if a student has completed their course and their student visa is expiring they will need to apply for another visa with work rights rather than renewing their student visa based on undertaking industry experience. |
