COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course trains students in the creative thinking and aesthetic design skills necessary for employment in the contemporary, multi-faceted communications industry. It encompasses diverse disciplines, including advertising, publishing, corporate and product design, brand management, multi-media, web-based communications, commercial illustration and photography, all of which require effective visual communication. Use of computer-based graphic programs is also a major component.


Students are required to complete the compulsory core units at each year level. Core units include:
- Applied Design
- Design Studies
- Art and Visual Culture
- Professional Studies (at final year). This unit introduces students to the commercial aspects of art practice and prepares them to enter employment in the visual arts and design industries or to work as practising artists or freelance designers.

Staff-student engagement time consists of lectures, workshops, technical demonstrations, tutorials, individual consultation and studio practice.
 
MAJOR AREAS OF STUDY
Typography, photography, applied design, multimedia, drawing, illustration methods and computer graphics.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
Successful completion of English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at undergraduate (EFS5 (60%) UG) level conducted by La Trobe University Language Centre; or

IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or

TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 550 with a score of 5 or better in the Test of Written English; or

TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 213 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or

TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 80 with no individual score less than 20; or

Satisfactory completion of an English language subject at Year 12 or equivalent level. This must have been completed in the last two years and at an academic level acceptable to the University; or

Approved equivalent.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must provide evidence of visual artwork in their area of interest. Verified photographic evidence of a folio is acceptable for international applicants.

INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE
The following types of industry experience are available in this course.
 
Workplace experience for academic credit
 
If the industry experience program is not a registered part of their course a student will need to hold work rights on their visa, this permits the student to work up to 20 hours per week when their course is in session and unlimited hours outside these times. However, if a student has completed their course and their student visa is expiring they will need to apply for another visa with work rights rather than renewing their student visa based on undertaking industry experience.
 
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Fields of employment are varied and extensive, covering such areas as advertising agencies, design studios, publishers, printers, television/audio-visual production, newspaper, magazine design, or wherever an idea or message has to be conveyed in visual terms. Other opportunities could also include corporate brand management and print and web design.
