COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course introduces students to contemporary Europe. Students study its culture, history, politics, trade and tourism and at least one of its languages. They are also encouraged to take advantage of La Trobe's European exchange programs. The course specifically targets students wanting to work, travel or study in Europe, and those intending to seek employment in European-oriented enterprises.

At first year students complete eight units of which there are three core, plus two units from either French, Italian, Greek or Spanish, and three electives.

Students also complete two units in a European language of their choice (French, Italian, Greek, or Spanish) and three other electives.

Second and third years: Students are required to complete additional core units and units from a selected list which complement the study of Contemporary Europe. These units can include:
- Economics
- History
- Law
- Philosophy
- Politics
- Sociology.
 
MAJOR AREAS OF STUDY
History, art history, European studies, politics, Italian, Greek, Spanish.
Other units relevant to Contemporary European Studies can be selected as electives in second and/or third year such as: Law of the European Community; Cultural Interactions and International Tourism; International Business Law.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
Successful completion of English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at undergraduate (EFS5 (60%) UG) level conducted by La Trobe University Language Centre; or

IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with no individual band score less than 6.0; or

TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 550 with a score of 5 or better in the Test of Written English; or

TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 213 with a score of 5 in essay writing; or

TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 80 with no individual score less than 20; or

Satisfactory completion of an English language subject at Year 12 or equivalent level. This must have been completed in the last two years and at an academic level acceptable to the University; or

Approved equivalent.
