About this program
This innovative program combines exercise science studies with professional grounding in the core topics of psychology. The program will help you develop the skills and knowledge to apply psychological theories to topics such as motivation, stress, attitudes, health, criminal activity, teaching skills, occupational behaviour, working conditions and organisational structures. You will be able to evaluate and understand tests that measure intellectual, behavioural and emotional states. By learning advanced interpersonal skills and the principles of counselling, you will gain the foundation skills to assist people with personal, health, vocational and social difficulties. This degree will provide a thorough knowledge in the basic and clinical sciences so you understand the exercise response when working in the areas of health, rehabilitation and sport. The combined degree provides a pathway to practise as a sports psychologist following further study.
Motion analysis, risk factors and rehabilitation applications are studied in the state-of-the-art biomechanics lab.
Professional recognition
As a graduate, you may undertake a further year of study for Honours in psychology, making you eligible for associate membership of the Australian Psychological Society and general registration (with probationary conditions) as a psychologist in Queensland.
Full registration requires a further two years of approved postgraduate study or supervised on-the-job training with a registered psychologist.
Career opportunities
The exercise science component of the program enables you to consider careers as diverse as cardiac technician, consultant in sport and exercise behaviour, exercise specialist, rehabilitation adviser, rehabilitation manager, respiratory scientist, sleep technologist, sports and recreation management, health promoter, orientation and mobility instructor, or counsellor. You'll also be qualified for professional employment in guidance, health management and other human services careers in health and organisational workplaces.
