Why choose this program?
You will develop the knowledge and skills to become a practising journalist - trained in traditional as well as new media.
This specialist and professionally-oriented degree has been designed in conjunction with industry specialists in response to the industry need for graduates with expertise in more than media studies and production skills along with the desire of journalism students to study in specific fields.
The program gives you generalist knowledge as a base from which you can develop specialist knowledge and skills in your chosen fields. The degree recognises the move of internet and online reporting into daily news journalism, so you will also learn online reporting and how to provide copy to specialist websites.
Your lecturers are experienced journalists from a variety of media who continue to maintain strong links with industry professionals. Journalists and editors working in the media teach into and occasionally provide guest lectures as part of the program.
In Year 1, you will undertake a thorough exploration of effective writing skills as they relate to the media and journalism. You will be introduced to the ideas, problems, issues, movements, theories and contemporary debates in journalism and the arts and you will also be introduced to the role and uses of the media in culture and creative expression.
In Years 2 and 3, you will complete a range of journalism courses which develop research and writing skills appropriate to media professions with special emphasis on print, radio, television and online journalism. In addition to the journalism courses, you will also complete two specialisations.
