 ·Highlights of the MID Program
INTEGRATING global comparative perspectives with an emphasis on Chinese development experience
Supporting INDIVIDUAL student growth
Providing a strong and extensive INTERNATIONAL network

·MID- An Innovative Program in International Development
In September 2007, eighteen youngsters from nine countries came to Tsinghua University to join the graduate program - Master in International Development (MID).

The MID program, taught in English and especially designed for international students, is offered by the School of Public Policy and Management at Tsinghua University. The School, been regarded as one of the pioneers in public administration education in China, launches the MID program to share China’s development experiences with the world and to make contribution to international development in the 21st century.

Professor Hu Angang, a renowned scholar in Chinese studies at Tsinghua University, said: “the key feature of the program is to provide international students in-depth understanding of Chinese economy and society from an international comparative perspective.”

 ·Right Choice
Abiola-Costello Hafsat Olaronke, who finished her first degree in political economy from Harvard, explained why she joined the MID program: “my motivation to pursue graduate study is for me to better help, my home country, Nigeria, to develop. So, I was really excited to be able to join this innovative program, MID, to learn more about China’s model of economic development and to see what we could apply from China’s model to help Nigeria.”

Her views are echoed by another MID student, Atymtay Yerkebulan, from Kazakhstan. He added: “so far, China’s rapid development helps its neighbor countries, like Kazakhstan. I want to understand the experience of China’s development and the international impact of it.”

The program attracts talents who are keen on developing a successful career in international development. Douglas Scott, a student from South Africa, said: “when I studied at George Washington University and worked as an intern in an international development organization there, I realized that my real interest in life is in understanding and promoting international development. I feel that the MID program at Tsinghua University is one of the best places for me to do this.”

Professor Lu Xiaobo, the director of the graduate program on Chinese political economy at Columbia University, said: “students from both developing and developed countries can greatly benefit from the MID program. I will strongly recommend the program to my students in the US if they want to pursue more knowledge and training in China.”

 ·Rewarding Experience
Gashahun Lemessa, a student from Ethiopia, described his experiences after one semester in the MID program. “The professors, who teach in the MID program, have outstanding academic backgrounds and extensive experiences in government consultation. They teach courses in a way of going beyond the traditional view and focusing on the practical nature of how countries develop. A lot of our course readings drew from the Chinese scholars, European scholars and American scholars. The courses of the program offer a multidisciplinary approach to the complex economic, political, technological, and social issues of development with China as a reference.

Yoo Ma-di, a student from South Korea finished her first degree in Journalism from Beijing University in 2007, immediately joined the MID program. She said: “my classmates come from all over the world with different academic and cultural backgrounds. Thus, we can share our knowledge from multiple perspectives. Each student has something to say on issues raised in the class; you learn a lot not only from professors but also your fellow classmates. Tsinghua University has the best students in China, who are expected to play leading roles in various fields of the country after graduation.

 ·Great Prospect
Looking into the future, each student has a very promising plan to apply what they have got through the MID program to their professional career practice.

Olaronke can’t wait to share what she learned from the MID program with her Nigerian countrymen. She said: “soon, I will go back to Nigeria to make a presentation about the Chinese model. After graduation, I’d like to then work in Nigeria to see how we can apply some of the models from China in Nigeria.”

Lemessa is especially interested in making contribution to the China-Africa relationship, in particular in the area of trade and investment.

Akloweg Yilak Kebede, another MID student, said: “the MID program will be ve ry helpful for me to pursue a career in urban environmental governance.”

There are educational programs in international development offered by world-class universities, such as Harvard and Oxford. As Professor Wang Youqiang, the deputy dean of the School of Public Policy and Public Management, emphasized, what distinguishes the MID program at Tsinghua from others is “to promote international development through understanding and advocating Chinese experiences”(By Te Kan,China Daily).
