Overview Nurses are an integral part of the health sector providing health care to individuals, families and communities in a wide range of settings. Why choose this course? The course provides a good balance of nursing theory and practice, and you will undertake supporting studies in biological, behavioural and social science, and the humanities. You are supervised by academic and clinical staff considered leaders in the nursing field.
Approximately half of the learning experiences are clinically based to ensure you gain extensive practical experience as a nurse. Clinical placements are available in a range of public and private hospitals and community services throughout Brisbane and in regional and rural areas of Queensland. Career Options Nursing graduates have excellent employment opportunities in a variety of health care settings or health promotion agencies. These include public and private hospitals and nursing homes as well as community service areas such as community health, occupational health, domiciliary nursing services, school health, Aboriginal health, pathology laboratories, alcohol and drug dependence and the armed services.
Many nurses specialise in a specific area such as aged care, mental health, paediatrics, midwifery, intensive care, cancer, medical/surgical, community practice, emergency or women's health.
Nurses are in demand all over the world and QUT nursing graduates have been successful in obtaining employment overseas, including in Britain, New Zealand and North America. Entry Requirements Applicants must have completed a bachelor degree (or equivalent) within the past 10 years. Applicants with degrees (or equivalent) completed more than 10 years ago must provide evidence of graduate work experience and/or further studies since course completion with their QTAC application to receive further consideration.
Students who admitted to the graduate entry program will automatically received one year of academic credit which will entitle the student to complete the degree in two years (full-time). Professional Membership This course is recognised by the Royal College of Nursing, Australia (RCNA) as satisfying the academic requirements for admission as a professional member. The Bachelor of Nursing is an accredited Nursing Pre-registration course of the Queensland Nursing Council (QNC). Other Course Requirements It is a requirement of Queensland Health that all students undertaking a clinical placement in a Q Health facility complete The Essentials component of the student orientation package which is available on the Queensland Health website.
blue cardAs required by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Act (2000) students must undergo a criminal history check and be issued with a Suitability Care (Blue Card) before commencing field experience/practicum in an organisation where they may work with children or young people. This is a mandatory requirement that must be met prior to undertaking any field experience/practicum program throughout your course. additional costsThe clinical practice units require students to undertake block practicums of two or more weeks duration. Students will be required to wear a uniform while on clinical practice, the cost of which is approximately $150. Students enrolling in this program are required to complete a course of vaccinations for Hepatitis B before commencing their clinical practice units. They are also required to have a current Senior First Aid Certificate or the equivalent prior to commencement of Clinical Practice 1. Course Structure
