General Entry Requirements and Pre-requisites

All entry is at the Certificate IV level which requires the equivalent of Australian Year 10 with passes in English or completion of any Certificate III course in Hospitality (e.g. Retail Baking or Cookery).

For Yr 10-11 and Yr 12 academic equivalence, please refer to the Entry Requirements Summary for your relevant country. This also details the normal English proficiency standard needed.

Completion of the Cert III in Commercial Cookery or Asian Cookery are also accepted pre-requisites for this program.

What You'll Learn in Each Course

In the Certificate IV, the student is trained across all the sections of a restaurant including food presentation, operating a bar, control and ordering stock, customer service and handling financial transactions.

In the Diploma, the student is trained to work as a supervisor within a restaurant. Subject areas include preparing budgets, rostering staff, establishing procedures, training colleagues, developing operational plans and managing financial and work place documents.

In the Advanced Diploma, the student is trained to work as a manager within a restaurant. Subject areas include managing staff, monitoring staff performance, recruiting and selecting staff, managing financial operations and managing the physical assets within the restaurant.

Work Experience, Activities & Events

The TAFE colleges work very closely with the five star hotels and restaurants in Perth & Western Australia. As part of the course, the students are assisted in obtaining paid part-time employment with these hotels and restaurants. The hospitality industry in Western Australia is booming at the moment and there is plenty of work available in this area for well trained and motivated students.

It is recommended that students complete industry work experience during their studies (upto 400 hours if finishing the Advanced Diploma).

Note: International students will need to apply for a work permit through the Australian Immigration Department to obtain paid work in industry.

Career Outcomes

Depending upon the stage of completion, graduates of this program in Hospitality can gain employment as Administrative & Supervisory staff; Duty, Floor or Restaurant Managers, or other advanced roles in the Hospitality industry.

Further Study & University Options

Successful completion of the Advanced Diploma of Hospitality will allow guaranteed entry to the Bachelor of Commerce (Tourism Management) at either Curtin University or Edith Cowan University in W.A.
