| COURSE DESCRIPTION |
The program provides a qualification to teach in secondary schools in the specialist areas of Physical Education and Outdoor Environmental Studies.
The course consists of 32 units of study in the following categories: Teaching Studies, Curriculum Studies, Discipline Studies and Electives. Students also undertake 120 days of professional experience in schools.
First to third years: The course includes theoretical components and practical experiences in outdoor education and environmental studies, physical education and general education. In the outdoor education component there are core fieldwork units in bushwalking, navigation, paddling and naturalist studies with options in cross-country skiing and rock climbing. In the physical education component students gain practical skills in a range of activities including aquatics, fitness, games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and ball handling.
Fourth year: Students undertake the two specialist teaching methods of physical education and outdoor education together with general education studies and further supervised teaching practice in schools. All students must have demonstrated the ability or the potential to meet the professional expectations of a beginning teacher. |

| Approximate costs include: $A1500-2000 for outdoor field work equipment including sleeping bag and wet weather gear (one-off cost). Students are encouraged to bring any camping gear they already have and to wait until they have commenced the course and are fully briefed before buying any new gear. |

| ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS |
Successful completion of English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 6B certificate at postgraduate (EFS PG2a (75%)) level conducted by La Trobe University Language Centre; or
IELTS (Academic) score of 7.0 with no individual band score less than 6.5; or
TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 600 with a score of 6 or better in the Test of Written English; or
TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 250 with a score of 6 in essay writing; or
TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 96 with no individual score less than 24; or
Satisfactory completion of an English language subject at Year 12 or equivalent level. This must have been completed in the last two years and at an academic level acceptable to the University; or
Approved equivalent. |

| SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS |
Applicants must complete the Supplementary Information form.
Applicants are required to provide evidence a National Criminal Record Check clearance from each country or countries in which they have lived for 12 months or more within the previous 10 years (after the age of 18 years). The criminal record check must be presented at enrolment. |

| Workplace experience for academic credit |
| |
| If the industry experience program is not a registered part of their course a student will need to hold work rights on their visa, this permits the student to work up to 20 hours per week when their course is in session and unlimited hours outside these times. However, if a student has completed their course and their student visa is expiring they will need to apply for another visa with work rights rather than renewing their student visa based on undertaking industry experience. |

| CAREER OPPORTUNITIES |
| This course prepares students for employment in secondary schools in Australia or overseas. Graduates work in school-based programs, in specialist outdoor centres run by both government and private schools, in outdoor educations and recreation businesses, as freelance outdoor instructors, in government recreation and youth agencies and in some environmental agencies. |

| PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION |
The course is accredited with the Victorian Institute of Teaching for registration to teach in outdoor education and physical education in secondary schools.
The Outdoor Education Council of Australia acknowledges the degree as appropriate for leadership in several outdoor pursuits. |
