Applications are processed on a rolling basis. Review of applications will start before the deadline and continue until all places are filled. Early applications are therefore strongly encouraged.

† Combined mode: Local students taking programmes in combined mode can attend full-time (12-18 credit units per semester) or part-time (no more than 11 credit units per semester) study in different semesters without seeking approval from the University. For non-local students, they will be admitted to these programmes for either full-time or part-time studies. Non-local students must maintain the required credit load for their full-time or part-time studies and any changes will require approval from the University. For undergraduate programmes, student visas will be issued for FT study only.

 

  • To provide students with an understanding of the nature of language and the various ways it impacts on society and culture in the context of Hong Kong;
  • To create a framework that allows students the option to focus on a particular aspect of language or its interaction with a particular societal/cultural process, be it the structure of language, language and law, and language and translation and interpretation;
  • To sharpen the students' intellect to enable them to function more effectively as language professionals. 

Entry

To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirement and must:

  • hold a degree from one of the tertiary educational institutions of Hong Kong funded by the University Grants Committee; or
  • hold a degree of a level equivalent to the above from a local or non-local institution recognized for this purpose by the University; or
  • have satisfied the academic requirements for corporate membership of a professional institution recognized for this purpose by the University; or
  • have obtained an equivalent qualification, or provided evidence of academic and professional attainments, acceptable for this purpose to the University.

Applicants may be required to take an entry test and/or interview.

Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should also fulfill the following minimum English proficiency requirement:

  • TOEFL score 550 (paper-based test) or 213 (computer-based test) or 79 (interet-based test); or
  • Overall band 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
  • Score 450 in the new College English Test (CET6) of China mainland or a pass in the old CET-6 test; or
  • Other equivalent qualifications.

Course

Upon completion of this programme,

  • students should have obtained a critical and up-to-date understanding of the nature of language and the impacts it can have on society and culture in the context of Hong Kong;
  • students should have developed the analytical and intellectual competence in dealing with issues of language as it impacts on societal/cultural processes;
  • students who specialize in Chinese should have obtained a solid grounding in Chinese that will allow them a better understanding and appreciation of the philosophy, language, literature and culture of China, in the classical, modern and contemporary periods, and have acquired, in particular, skills and methods in studying Chinese ancient classics;
  • students who specialize in language and law should have obtained training vital for the transformation of Hong Kong from a unilingual to a bilingual legal system, and have acquired the linguistic and conceptual tools required for legal writing, legal translation, and bilingual legal drafting;
  • students who specialize in linguistics should have obtained a solid grounding in linguistic theory which will enable them to better understand the structure of language and the social, cultural and psychological aspects of language use, and to apply this understanding in their work;
  • students who specialize in translation and interpretation should have acquired a range of conceptual tools and skills essential for enhancing their ability in handling translation and interpretation tasks, and obtained a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted issues involved in translation and interpretation.

Professional Accreditation

The Master of Arts in Language Studies (with specialization in Chinese) and the Master of Arts in Language Studies (with specialization in Linguistics) have been approved by the Vetting Committee of the Education and Manpower Bureau (EMB) to be included on the list of language major degrees for the purpose of meeting the requirements of the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR).

The Postgraduate Diploma in Language Studies (with specialization in Chinese) and the Postgraduate Diploma in Language Studies (with specialization in Linguistics) have been approved by the Vetting Committee of the Education and Manpower Bureau to be included on the list of approved post-graduate programmes in subject knowledge for English/Chinese Language teachers for the purpose of meeting the requirements of the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR).

Bonus Features

The PGD programme is part of the Postgraduate Certificate/Postgraduate Diploma/Master of Arts in Language Studies programme. By taking an additional 6 credit units, PGD graduates will be awarded the Master of Arts degree.
