† Combined mode: Local students taking programmes in combined mode can attend full-time (12-18 credit units per semester) or part-time (no more than 11 credit units per semester) study in different semesters without seeking approval from the University. For non-local students, they will be admitted to these programmes for either full-time or part-time studies. Non-local students must maintain the required credit load for their full-time or part-time studies and any changes will require approval from the University. For undergraduate programmes, student visas will be issued for FT study only.

 

The primary aim of the programme is to equip students with professional and advanced education in counselling so as to develop competent professional practitioners working in a broad range of human services. Upon completion of the programme, graduates are expected to:

  • apply competently the advanced knowledge and skills of counselling so as to become more autonomous and independent in their practice;
  • reflect on their practice so as to construct, articulate and evaluate their own philosophy and practice of counselling;
  • contribute to the advancement of counselling knowledge through the practice-research nexus; and
  • be culturally sensitive in counselling practice.

Entry

To be eligible for admission, you must:

  • hold a degree of one of the universities in Hong Kong or of any overseas institution recognized for this purpose by the University;

or

  • have obtained an equivalent qualification, or provide evidence of academic and professional attainments acceptable for this purpose by the University;

    and

  • normally possess a minimum of two years' working experience in social service, education, health, human services, human resources or related areas.

Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should also fulfill the following minimum English proficiency requirement:

  • TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test) or 213 (computer-based test) or 79 (internet-based test); or
  • Overall band score of 6.5 in International English Language Testing (IELTS); or
  • Score 450 in the new College English Test (CET-6) of China mainland or a pass in the old CET-6 test; or
  • Other equivalent qualifications

Course

The programme is designed to provide postgraduate education or training for:

  • the fundamental concepts, theories, issues, and topics in the field of counselling;
  • the basic skills, techniques, and approaches for counselling;
  • an awareness of the personal and professional requirements for counselling; and
  • a sensitivity to the local and cultural issues in counselling.

To cater for different needs and expectations of the market, students may choose to enter and graduate from the programme at different levels which are:

  • Postgraduate Certificate in Counselling (PGCC)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling (PGDC)
  • Master of Social Sciences in Counselling (MSSC)

For obtaining the PGCC, students need to complete a minimum of 12 credits and may apply for the transfer to a maximum of 6 credit units.

For obtaining the PGDC, students need to complete a minimum of 24 credits and may apply for the transfer of a maximum of 12 credit units.

For obtaining the MSSC, students need to complete a minimum of 30 credits and may apply for the transfer of a maximum of 15 credit units.

Apart from common core courses, the programme also offers stream-specific electives in:

  • Child, Youth and Family
  • Health and Aging
  • Work and Adjustment

Project or Counselling Practicum courses are designed relevant to the streams as well. There are also courses on Counselling Skills Laboratory and Advanced Counselling Skills Laboratory.
