We will provide you with a thorough grounding in the theoretical and practical aspects of the computer science discipline. These skills are necessary for successful careers as system architects and technology officers in the continually developing information technology environment. Through our flexible curriculum, we will also enable you to develop a strong foundation in the overall discipline as well as specialization in a particular area. Through a wide range of electives, you can keep pace with trends in technology.

Students from all study streams such as science, business and arts may apply.

To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy the
General Entrance Requirements and the following programme specific entrance requirements:

  • C in HKCEE Additional Mathematics or Mathematics
    or
    D in AS Applied Mathematics, or Mathematics and Statistics
    or
    E in AL Applied Mathematics or Pure Mathematics
    or
    A higher diploma or an associate degree in computer related discipline, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Students with the relevant associate degree, higher diploma or the relevant academic qualifications may be granted credit transfer on admission and complete the programme in shorter duration.

Course

The main subject areas are:

  • Computer Systemsprovides fundamental coverage of hardware principles and computer organization, operating systems, data communications and networks.
  • Algorithm Design and Analysis and Mathematics—develops your problem solving and analytical skills through study of discrete mathematics, object-oriented programming, and algorithm design techniques.
  • Software Engineeringcovers the entire software development life cycle, with emphasis on software design and synthesis, database design and management, and understanding of social, ethical and professional issues.
  • Seminar Serieskeeps you abreast of the latest development in technology and market trends and to introduce students to a research culture in the early years of study. Outside scholars, IT professionals, and hardware/software vendors will be invited as guest speakers or honorary lecturers.
  • Electives—covers a wide spectrum including information security, e-commerce, pervasive computing, Internet computing, computer graphics, multimedia technologies, data mining and compilers.

Study streams are provided to allow in-depth study in a selected area. This will enhance your competitiveness in developing careers in buisness sectors or academia. The four study steams are:

  • Systems and Networks Streamfocuses on system architectures and distributed computing.
  • Software Engineering and Project Management Streamfocuses on software design and quality, and project management.
  • Multimedia Computing Stream—focuses on technologies in computer graphics, human computer interface and multimedia systems.
  • Information Security Stream—focuses on internet security, security management and current issues.

Professional Accreditation

The programme is the first computer science programme in Hong Kong accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).

Bonus Features

After completing two years of full-time study, you will spend one year in IT Professional Placement (ITPP) before returning for your final year of full-time study. ITPP enables you to integrate and apply your knowledge learned from school in an actual working environment. It also gives you a head start in your career after graduation as it is recognized as one year's experience. Sponsor organizations of ITPP include international computer vendors, such as IBM, Hewlett-Packard; banks such as Hong Kong Bank, JP Morgan Chase Bank; Hong Kong Government and related organizations such as the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, the  Hospital Authority and the Housing Authority; and other enterprises, such as Hong Kong Monetary Authority, The Hong Kong Electric Co Ltd. and Reuters HK Ltd.
