We aim to equip you with specialized modern knowledge in structural engineering relating specifically to the design of building structures. You will have an edge over typical civil engineering graduates because you are endowed with a broad-based knowledge of structural engineering which emphasizes building structures, and possess a strong background in building services engineering and in construction engineering and management.

Careers

The construction industry is one of the most important industries in Hong Kong, employing almost 10% of the workforce. A total of 650,000 housing units have been built over the past decade and this trend is expected to continue in order to cater for the needs of an expanding and increasing by affluent population. Graduates in Structural Engineering will continue to be in high demand.

Entry

To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements and the following specific entrance requirements:

  • E in two of the following HKALE subjects: Physics, Engineering Science, Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Chemistry

       OR

  • E in one of the following HKALE subjects: Physics, Engineering Science, Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Chemistry;

and

E in two of the following HKALE AS subjects: Physics, Applied Mathematics, Mathematics and Statistics, Chemistry

Forbidden combination:

  • HKALE Physics/HKALE Engineering Science/ HKALE AS Physics
  • HKALE Pure Mathematics/HKALE AS Mathematics and Statistics
  • HKALE Applied Mathematics/HKALE AS Applied Mathematics/HKALE AS Mathematics and Statistics

Course

Year 1 core subjects are common with the Construction Engineering and Management, and Building Services Engineering, which include:

  • Building Technology
  • Construction Communication
  • Construction Contract
  • Construction Materials and Structural Mechanics

Year 2 core subjects include:

  • Construction Technology
  • Design of Structural Elements
  • Fundamentals of Structural Analysis
  • Geotechnical and Foundation Engineering

Year 3 core subjects include:

  • Building Structures Design
  • Computer-Aided Structural Analysis and Design
  • Design of Structures
  • Final Year Project

Apart from core subjects, in all three years you are required to take a number of elective subjects in Building Services Engineering and in Construction Management.

Professional Accreditation

Full accreditation was given to the programme by the Structural Engineering Divison of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.

Bonus Features

Upon successful completion of the common courses in the first year, you will be provided with an option to enter either Building Services Engineering or Construction Engineering and Management in the second and third years.
