The aim of this programme is to train vital human resources of strategic importance to Hong Kong as Asia's World City and as the leading city in South China. Upon graduation, you will have a good understanding of the social, economic, political and cultural developments and changes in the major countries in East and Southeast Asia. You will understand Chinese social life, the dynamics of regional developments, and Hong Kong's critical position in the Asian region, and will be able to bring an outward-looking and regional perspective to decision-making within Hong Kong-based organizations. The programme trains you for your professional careers, developing your cultural literacy and extending your international and regional perspectives for careers in the business and commercial sector, in government, and in the not-for-profit sector. Upon graduation, you will be employed in a wide variety of occupations in marketing research and social research; journalism and mass media; advertising, marketing and public relations; sales and merchandise; tourist industry; business management; education; among other fields. Entry To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements. Course Our teaching and learning strategies emphasize the development of analytical skills that are useful and applicable in a wide range of professional settings. We also place considerable emphasis on critical understanding, oral presentations and good writing skills. The learning outcomes of the programme are thus practical and useful for business, as well as the public, sectors. - Courses on East and Southeast Asia include: Introduction to East and Southeast Asia; The State and Economic Development in East and Southeast Asia; Culture and Development in East and Southeast Asia; Changing Social Structure in East and Southeast Asia; Political Dynamics in East and Southeast Asia; Chinese Society in Transition; and Development and Social Change in Hong Kong
Other elective courses include professional internship, problem-based studies and applied research courses (strengthening students’ practical skills and analytical abilities) and thematic regional studies (on topics such as education, status of women, religion, the environment, mass media, work and labour, globalization, and so on).
