This programme is designed for young adults looking for a professional career in serving people in need and contributing to social changes and social reform. You will receive foundation training in social sciences and begin exploring what social workers do in the first year of study, before you undergo a rigorous theoretical and practical training in social work in classroom and workplaces. Careers Upon graduation, you will acquire the competence to practice as a professionally qualified social worker in a variety of settings through which human service is delivered (e.g. social service agencies, schools and health care institutions), to work in the field of human resources (e.g. customer service and staff training), or to pursue further studies in social work or related fields (e.g. psychology and education). You will be eligible to apply for social work positions in governmental and non-governmental organizations as a Registered Social Worker (RSW). Entry To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements.
References from school principals on academic and non-academic performance and evidences of personal qualities, community participation, sustained involvements in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities would be desirable to support your application. Admission interview and aptitude test are normally required. The first round of interview will take place in May or June and the second round in mid July, immediately after the announcement of Advanced Level examination results. For JUPAS applicants, priority for interview will be given to band A choice and those with promising performance in public examinations and/or extra-curricular activities. Course - Social Science Foundation Courses
- Core social work courses on values and ethics, theories and practices, skills training laboratories, social work research and programme evaluation, developmental psychology, mental health, and law for social workers.
- Social work elective courses to help you develop competence in selected social work interventions.
- Concurrent practicum: One in year 2 and one in year 3. A total of 816 hours for you to acquire the competence in knowledge-based practice in the real world under regular weekly supervision by experienced practice teachers. An extra 100 hours of practicum-related and learning activities will also be provided to enhance students' competencies.
Professional Accreditation
Graduates from the programme are qualified to register with the Social Workers Registration Board as Registered Social Workers (RSW). Bonus Features
Best performing students will be awarded scholarships jointly by the University of Houston (UH) and City University of Hong Kong (CityU) to study at the Graduate School of Social Work, University of Houston for a semester. Credits earned at UH and CityU will qualify them to further their studies at the Master’s level at UH. Programme transfer within the Department can be provided after the first year of study, with academic advisement provided by the Year-Coordinator and is subject to administrative approval. Access to a rich profile of co-curricular activities and opportunities to work alongside with teachers in research and action learning projects. Minor studies in psychology, applied sociology, criminology are offered for students within the Department.
