Our graduates have creative skills in the field of media aesthetics, digital animation, digital video production and post-production, digital sound recording and editing, and multimedia applications, specializing in the areas of directing, producing, and writing for traditional and new media. The programme helps students develop a deep understanding of the need for originality, teamwork, and the successful expression of a personal vision through various media formats. Graduates will acquire a deep understanding of the structures and strategies of the media industry, and will be equipped to contribute actively to its future development. By emphasizing both the acquisition of technical proficiency as well as artistic and personal growth, the programme will help develop and extend your creative potential and capacity to imagine, facilitate the development of a cultural identity, and sharpen your understanding of the broader social environment. Careers Upon graduation, you will be qualified for a wide range of positions in the media industry, such as animators, writers, directors, cinematographers, editors, sound designers, special effects designers, computer game designers, multimedia producers, production managers, new media designers and arts administrators. You may have specializations in one or more of these areas, but it is likely that our graduates will be qualified to take up positions in secondary areas of interest as well. Graduates can expect to find employment in sectors such as animation, film, television, and video production, advertising, Internet and multimedia design, and other areas in which there is a high demand for creative content. Entry To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements. Consideration will be given to employment record, travel, and other examples of life experience. You may be required to sit for a written examination and attend an interview intended to gauge your creative potential. To facilitate the assessment of your application, you are highly recommended to submit a portfolio and/or a self-introduction letter to the School of Creative Media (SCM). Direct applicants can submit their portfolio/letter in advance. (Please refer to SCM's website for the latest submission deadline.) JUPAS applicants may present their portfolio/letter during the interview session. Portfolio materials may include still photography, paintings/drawings, sculpture, musical compositions/performances, films/videos, software, multi-media productions, academic or creative writing, or other form of imaginative activity. Course The programme stresses both theoretical and practical aspects of the media today.
A typical three-year study plan is as follows:
Year 1 - comprises introductory courses in a wide range of options such as 2D studio practice, computing, photography, creative writing/ literature, sound, and interactivity. These courses specify the basic skills and attitudes shared by all SCM graduates.
Year 2 - you will select one of the following three "studios": - Animation
- Critical Intermedia Laboratory
- Moving Image: Live Action
You can follow a highly structured, but flexible, path of study within your chosen area. You are also required to choose elective courses outside of your own studio. Year 3 - you will consolidate the knowledge acquired in the previous two years and continue to take more advanced-level courses in your chosen studio while focusing on a final year project. Bonus Features You have many opportunities to participate in study trips abroad, including the mainland China, other parts of Asia and elsewhere. You may also have the opportunity to study abroad as exchange students to enrich your educational experience. You are free to join the summer internship programme, media work competitions and festivals.
