If you'd like to be able to dismantle, repair and re-assemble all kinds of machinery, including complex manufacturing plant, land vehicles, ship and aircraft equipment; to operate engineering machine tools and welding equipment to make and repair the parts you need, this is the programme for you. Add the ability to use the computer software used in engineering companies (including CAD) and calculation skills to make sure you do the job right, and you have a comprehensive outline of the skills you will learn from the Certificate of Engineering programme.
The Certificate in Engineering Technology programmes offer you the maximum flexibility in your final career choice. They can get you started in a career as a mechanical engineer and are the ideal introduction to a career as a skilled tradesperson or technician engineer.
Technician engineers are employed making prototype equipment and machinery, as a drawing office assistant helping to produce CAD designs or in many other ways.
The programme will also prepare you for further study, such as the AUT Diploma in Engineering (Specialty), the National Diploma in Engineering or an apprenticeship and a National Certificate in an engineering trade.
The Certificate in Engineering Technology has the following options available:
- Mechanical Specialty
- Product Design Specialty
- Maintenance Specialty
You will complete most of the NQF unit standards for Year One National Certificate in the major engineering trade of your choice. The programme is very hands-on and will allow you to reach a competent level in machining, assembly, computing and welding skills.

752001 Trade Practice (15)
752002 Technical Studies (15)
753004 Workplace Safety (15)
Mechanical Specialty
752213 Introduction to Computing (15)
753213 Engineering Fundamentals (15)
752003 Production Engineering (15)
753216 Engineering Graphics (15)
This option of the Certificate will give you a good foundation of engineering theory, manual workshop, welding skills and computer knowledge.
You may use these skills to go on to complete an apprenticeship and a National Certificate, giving you status as a skilled tradesperson. Many students use the Certificate in Engineering Technology to advance to the AUT Diploma in Engineering.
Product Design Specialty
752213 Introduction to Computing (15)
753213 Engineering Fundamentals (15)
753216 Engineering Graphics (15)
763095 Product Design Principles (15)
This option gives you a flying start into the Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. However, it places greater emphasis on computer-aided draughting and design and less on workshop skills.
The programme will introduce you to professional computer graphics software and the steps required to design and produce consumer products. This programme is ideal if you would like to go on to a career in engineering and product design.
Maintenance Specialty
752003 Production Engineering (15)
753580 Engineering Systems (15)
753585 Maintenance Best Practice 1 (15)
