Why choose this course?
Advertising is not just a job, it's a passion. It is wanting to step into the consumer's shoes and see how it feels. It's the thrill of seeing the first advertisement you have ever written go to air, and videotaping it to watch it again and again. It's thinking outside the square to plan better ways to reach customers. It's winning your first client pitch, then producing an effective advertising campaign to satisfy their needs. It can even be building your very own advertising agency, so that you can give another QUT graduate their first job.

More on advertising
The word "advertising" comes from the Latin "adverto" and means to turn towards, to attract. So it is no wonder that advertising involves psychology, passion and persuasion. It is a business process that begins with research and strategy and extends into outstanding creative concepts that reach through the clutter to touch us and make us feel and think a little differently. It is a vibrant business and a rewarding career.

Our reputation
QUT was the first university to offer a degree level program in advertising - a decade before anyone else in Australia. This course remains the only advertising degree to be taught within a business school, giving QUT advertising graduates a strategic and commercial edge.

Industry links
The advertising industry is a network, and one which QUT is strongly connected with. Our School of Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations sponsors advertising events and awards, such as the recent 4UM? and the annual CREAM awards. We often find we are presenting awards to our own graduates!

Our lecturers have worked in the industry, many as CEOs of advertising agencies, so bring real-world experience and in-depth theoretical underpinnings to the classroom.

ALINEA, the student association for advertising, marketing and public relations students, is another link to the real world. Through ALINEA you can access industry professionals, and find out about events run by professional bodies such as the Advertising Federation of Australia. It's also a great way to meet your peers, and create your own career networks.

Practical teaching
As an integral part of this course, you'll work in a team to formulate an advertising campaign from a real-world client's brief. You'll research your client's advertising problem and identify strategies to solve it. You'll then develop creative ideas, match them to innovative media solutions and deliver a boardroom pitch to the client. Your client could be a Queensland icon such as Queensland Day or the Ekka, a charity such as Muscular Dystrophy, or a national consumer goods or pharmaceutical company.

Course Combinations and Career Outcomes
As a QUT advertising graduate, your career is limited only by your own imagination. You could work as an advertising manager, planning and controlling the advertising for your employer and liaising with advertising agencies. You may work as an advertising planner or researcher, or within the print or electronic media as a sales representative or copywriter.

Your choice of second study area can also impact on your future career. Extending your knowledge into advertising beyond your major allows you to add to your professional toolkit with skills in areas such as direct marketing and internet promotion, as well as more technical knowledge in the areas of regulations, ethics, strategy and planning. These skills are highly sought after in advertising agencies, the heartland of advertising activity, where you can work in account service, creative, media buying or production.

The areas of marketing, public relations and integrated marketing communication offer complementary second study areas. Adding a stronger marketing background or strategic communications skills will see you well positioned to work in industry, whether your interests lie in consumer goods, the public sector or charity organisations.

Other Majors
See also separate entries for the following majors in this course: Accountancy, Banking and Finance, Economics, Electronic Business, Human Resource Management, International Business, Management, Marketing, and Public Relations.

Professional Recognition
Students completing the Bachelor of Business majoring in Advertising will meet the requirements for membership to the Advertising Federation of Australia (AFA), the Brisbane Advertising Association (BAA), and the Brisbane Advertising and Design Club (BAD).
