This diploma is unique in New Zealand. In the last 20 years, changes to the structure of many New Zealand manufacturing operations, especially those of primary producers, have resulted in a severe shortage of suitably qualified manufacturing professionals. Manufacturers recognise the need to engage in competitive manufacturing principles and practices to be internationally competitive.

It is now widely recognised that current production and manufacturing team leaders and line managers require academic knowledge about improvement tools and systems in order to be more effective in their roles. Small to medium manufacturing enterprises as well as major industry sectors have identified the potential benefits of a move towards specialisation in the area of competitive manufacturing, one such aim being to significantly increase manufacturing productivity through Competitive Manufacturing strategies and practices.

The Diploma in Competitive Manufacturing fills a recognised gap in the current qualification structure for this field and provides graduates with the academic and technical skills necessary to play a vital role in many of New Zealand's manufacturing concerns.

Graduates will have the skills and abilities to be able to carry out analysis of manufacturing operations, and to be able to implement Competitive Manufacturing systems and procedures.

Opportunities will be provided for students to staircase into an undergraduate degree after they have completed the diploma. There is the option to staircase directly into the Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Mechanical) where a production engineering specialty is available or the Bachelor in Engineering (Mechanical).
