Following requests from Pasifika communities, the Ministry of Education consulted with Pasifika early childhood communities and has created this qualification that reflects Pasifika cultures, values, and aspirations, and is grounded in early childhood education pedagogy, theory and practice. There are increasing numbers of Pasifika children entering early childhood education centres and a growing need for qualified early childhood teachers. The primary goal of this programme is to prepare teachers who are effective practitioners in early childhood settings, especially within centres that are characterised as Pasifika focused, or incorporate significant numbers of Pasifika children. This includes the preparation of beginning teachers who will be eligible to apply for provisional registration as teachers, and for teachers currently registered who wish to undertake professional development in Pasifika education. Programme Code: ND0983 Level: 7 Points: 360 Duration: Three years full time / Equivalent part time Venue: 6 Osterley Way, Manukau City Starting date: 3 March 2008 Application deadline: 16 November 2007 AUT encourages early application. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS - NCEA: 48 Level 2 credits to include 12 Level 2 credits in English or Te Reo Māori or Te Reo Rangatira including 4 Level 2 credits in each of reading and writing

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS Applicants for whom English or Māori is not their first language are required to provide proof of an acceptable pass/grade gained in an accepted English language test. THE KEY SKILLS YOU WILL ACQUIRE The programme aims to develop capable early childhood teachers who are knowledgeable and skilled in the philosophy and practices of teaching, and who have developed personal and professional qualities that demonstrate positive dispositions for the wellbeing of children, family/whānau and colleagues, especially within Pasifika contexts. FURTHER STUDIES This programme has been structured so that graduates will be eligible to complete the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Teaching) degree, with the need to undertake just one further semester of full time study.
