This three-year full-time degree programme is designed for both campus- and centre-based students. Campus-based students attend classes throughout the week. Centre-based students, who are already working in New Zealand early childhood centres, attend classes on one day each week and work with an approved associate teacher in their centre. The requirements and content are the same for both modes of delivery. An upgrade option is designed for holders of an existing Diploma of Teaching (ECE) who wish to upgrade to a degree. For more information about the upgrade option go to BEd (Tchg) EC Upgrade The BEd (Tchg) EC takes three full years to complete (up to 6 years part-time) and operates over three trimesters each year. The timetable for the centre-based programme means your day on campus changes as you move through each year of your programme. Campus-based students can expect to attend classes four days each week. As you are required to have a working knowledge of a range of early childhood centres you will need to experience a variety of centres. Each year of the centre-based programme you will be placed on a three-week teaching experience at a different centre working with children, parents and staff. Campus-based students undertake six to eight weeks teaching experience across two blocks each year. Applicants to the centre-based programme are required to provide evidence verifying employment in an early childhood centre at the time of application. This degree aims to develop professional teachers who are sensitive to human needs, flexible, adaptable and resourceful - people who can become leaders, able to work not only with young children but with a wide variety of adults in the community. Programme Requirements The programme is divided into the following strands: - Curriculum Studies (CUST courses)
- Cultural Studies (CUST courses)

Selection Process All teacher education programmes involve a selection process which assesses suitability for teaching. Selection is carried out as part of the enrolment process. Detailed course information for both degrees is contained in the Early Childhood Teacher Education Handbook which all students selected into these programmes receive. Timetable All EDUC courses have 2-3 hours of lectures and/or tutorials each week. Please check in the Course Catalogue for details of lecture times. You should plan to attend all lectures and tutorials and spend approximately 12-18 hours per week on each course. Assessment Assessment is ongoing throughout your study. There are no examinations. At the beginning of each course students receive a course outline. This contains all the necessary information about the course including the number of lectures and tutorials, the course content, recommended readings, and information about the assignments.
