This four-year conjoint programme gives students the opportunity to become a skilled early childhood teacher and, at the same time, pursue a BA. This degree is most appropriate if you are seeking a degree level early childhood teaching qualification, and are able to study full-time. If you are already employed in an early childhood centre, the three-year BEd (Tchg) EC may be the more appropriate course of study. Students of the the BA/BTeach (ECE) degree will spend blocks of time at both the Kelburn and Karori Campuses. To do this degree you must enrol at Victoria University and be selected for teacher education through an assessment exercise on campus. This degree is expected to give access to higher salary structures. The overall goal of this conjoint degree is to produce beginning early childhood teachers who are well educated and capable of engaging in continuing self development as multi-disciplinary professionals working in a diverse society. Major Subject Requirements Requirements for the BA: - 12 courses, four each at 100, 200 and 300 level
- Six of these courses form the Early Childhood Studies major; EDUC 153, 154, 253, 314, 358 and one further EDUC 200 or 300 level course
- Six further courses selected from the BA schedule.
Within the six courses that make up the Early Childhood Studies major you will examine the wider education and societal contexts in which early childhood care and education exist. These courses orientate you towards understanding the different theories and philosophies that guide everyday teaching and interactions with children. The other six selected courses allow you to pursue study in one or more areas of interest to you, and support you in becoming a well-educated individual who is able to draw upon knowledge beyond the discipline of early childhood education. Requirements for the BTeach: There are two strands: - Teaching and Professional Studies courses:
