Why choose this course?
Do you like to provide leadership and motivate others to work towards a common goal? Does the idea of improving the effectiveness, efficiency and profitability of a business appeal to you? If you like to think outside the box, find that you can devise different ideas to everyone else, or if you like solving problems then management could be the discipline for you.

More about management
Management skills can be the passport to many exciting career opportunities in Australia and overseas - they can be applied in all occupations and industries, providing ultimate transferability of experience, and the widest possible employment prospects.

You will develop skills in analytical and strategic thinking, decision making, leadership abilities, negotiation skills and an understanding of change and how to adapt yourself, your team and your organisation to cope with change - skills that can not only help you build a fantastic career, but can also be useful in everyday life.

Industry links
Our lecturers provide research and consultancy services in industry, through links with Brisbane Airport Corporation, John Holland Construction and various government departments. These real-world activities are linked back to the units taught, ensuring you graduate with up-to-date skills and knowledge. These industry links also provide access to guest lecturers and tutors who offer real life experiences, examples and can show you how to apply the theory to the real world.

Practical teaching
In your third year you will consolidate your learning and extend yourself, developing analytical thinking and decision making skills. Working in groups, you'll take on a business consultant role, and solve management problems that face real businesses every day, such as coping with changes in the economy, consumer influences and your industry, and assessing and charting long-term strategic direction for your organisation.

Recommended Course Structure
A major in management does not necessarily equip you for a corner office as a CEO. Well, not immediately!

A management major will provide you with strategic and decision making skills, so the combination with a functional business major such as human resource management, marketing or accounting is a great career choice. These functional areas will provide you with specific skills which may help you gain employment initially. Your management skills will give you greater scope to add value to the organisation through being able to motivate staff and co-workers, provide vision and direction, and assist in achieving competitive advantage, as well as enhancing your career progression through to senior management positions.

Alternatively you can build on your management major with additional studies in more specialised areas, including project management, occupational health and safety and new venture strategies. You could enter the workforce as a project coordinator, gathering information or work outputs to achieve a specific management outcome. As a trainee manager in a larger company you would build your knowledge of your employer's operations and industry, with a view to promotion through the hierarchy. A specialist role such as health and safety or change management would see you concentrate in that area, and progress to higher levels of management and responsibility throughout your career.

See also separate entries for the following majors in this course: Accountancy, Advertising, Banking and Finance, Economics, Human Resource Management, International Business, Marketing, and Public Relations.
