Why choose this course? Are you intrigued by how organisations manage their reputations, raise their profiles in the community and work with the media to promote their activities? Are you are interested in a career designing and coordinating the communication and promotional activities of an organisation such as websites, newsletters, media kits, annual reports and special events? If you are good at writing, organising, have creative flair and the ability to think big, consider a career in public relations. More about public relations Public relations is a growing field and is becoming more critical in an era where corporate social responsibility is increasingly important. Organisations realise the value of their reputation with the community, their customers, and the business and political environment, and have a need to explain their activities to the community. This course is designed to develop public relations graduates who are capable of satisfying this need for professional communicators in corporate, government, consultancy and not-for-profit sectors. Industry links QUT's course is highly recognised, with a history of more than 25 years educating industry professionals. This means you will enter an industry with an established network of QUT graduates in senior positions across the globe.
Our teaching staff have strong industry experience, working within organisations or public relations consultancies, and have extensive links with current practitioners. These links to the industry provide access to guest lecturers, who present real-world case studies in classes, and the opportunity for internships in consultancies, government, corporate and community sectors.
ALINEA, the student association for public relations, advertising and marketing students, is another link to the real world. Through ALINEA you can access industry professionals and find out about events run by professional bodies such as the Public Relations Institute of Australia. It's a great way to meet your fellow students and create your own career networks. Practical teaching The practical nature of this major means that you will graduate with a portfolio of work to demonstrate your skills and potential to employers.
Third year project work is another opportunity to gain real-world experience. Acting as an internal adviser, you'll explore corporate communication issues for organisations and track contemporary issues through case studies. You'll also take the role of consultant, advising a real-world client on their problem or opportunity. Working with other students as a consulting team you'll prepare a campaign plan to present to your client. Your writing skills will be further developed through your campaign portfolio. Work placements are also available to match your interests in consultancies, government, corporate settings and community groups. From charities to professional sport teams, major events to law firms, consumer goods to the government sector, all seek the services of public relations professionals.
Public relations specialists help organisations build and manage their reputations and work with a range of stakeholders including employees, shareholders, customers, regulators and members of the community.
You may enter the marketplace as a public relations manager or consultant, editor of trade or specialist publication, speechwriter, information officer, corporate communication professional, special events manager, promotions manager, media advisor, or corporate communication officer.
The areas of advertising, marketing and integrated marketing communication offer a complementary second study area. Adding stronger marketing or strategic communication skills will see you well positioned to focus on the promotional aspects of marketing and public relations, helping organisations design programs to attract consumers. Studies in the emerging area of integrated marketing communication will allow you to build a comprehensive toolkit of promotional strategies.
Complementing your public relations course with study in management or human resource management will set you up for a career in corporate communication, helping organisations communicate with employees and the wider community. Professional Recognition This course is accredited by the industry?s peak professional body, the Public Relations Institute of Australia (PRIA). QUT maintains strong links with this body and a number of our teaching staff hold executive positions. On completion of your course, you will be eligible to apply for membership of PRIA, which provides access to professional education and career opportunities, and promotes the standing of public relations practitioners. Course Structure With its flexible course structure, our Bachelor of Business allows you to tailor your studies to suit your own needs and career aspirations. The four distinct components within the degree give over 140 combinations of majors and specialisations.
1. Eight Faculty core units give you a broad-based introduction to business principles.
2. Your primary major of six units will provide the overall direction for your future career path.
3. Your second area of study of six units will hone your career decision. - Maximise your career options with an added breadth of knowledge by completing another of the business majors - Add a depth of knowledge in your area of interest with further study within your primary business major - Or add a flavour or emphasis to your business degree with study in another of our business areas, or a foreign language.
