If you are passionate about people and want a career that combines both the technical and human side of business, consider a major in human resource management. More about Human Resource Management Many people consider a career in human resource management because they enjoy working closely with people. This is an important consideration but not the only one.
Companies in all industries increasingly seek advantages over their competitors through high standards of customer service and innovative work practices. Because human resource functions such as recruitment, selection, training and development are integral to these areas, you have the opportunity to have a real impact on your employer's long-term success.
It is an exciting time to embark on a career in human resource management. New technologies, an aging population and an emphasis on work-life balance are all contributing to a profound evolution in the nature of work and the composition of the workforce. Industry links Many of our teaching staff continue to grow their professional experience through consultancy and human resource management positions. You can be sure the knowledge you gain is the latest industry thinking, and immediately applicable to real-world situations. These links to business also provide the opportunity for work placements, case studies, site visits and guest lecturers to further enhance your studies with practical experience. Practical teaching You will explore and critique real world cases and projects, applying your theoretical knowledge to develop practical strategic policy suggestions for organisations. You'll use critical thinking and decision making skills to analyse, diagnose and provide recommendations for implementing organisational change and policy interventions. Course Combinations and Career Outcomes Your human resource management major will prepare you for a range of general positions, such as payroll, recruitment, selection and retention. This range of skills will be ideal for small to medium sized businesses, where the human resource role encompasses a full range of activities.
If you are looking to specialise in human resource management areas such as training and development, industrial relations or occupational health and safety, you can extend your knowledge in this area beyond your major with a range of electives. You will also open up career options in strategic areas such as workforce planning, corporate direction and workplace reform. Specialists in these areas are generally employed in larger organisations and the public sector.
You can also broaden your career options to more strategic roles, including leadership and policy formation, with some study in management. This combination can also set you up for more general management positions.
